I've search for grip but haven't come up with a description of a travel case called a grip.
Any ideas?

I have grip for 53a. --- I can remember my grandparents refering to their suitcases as "grips" so i hope the answer is right.

I have just checked dictionary.com and this is one of the definitions they have for "grip" ---(Older Use). a small traveling bag.

I was thinking bison - but then if that is the case, I've got Mist wrong and Noose wrong being the down clues making up the 1st and 3rd letters.

163a = GNU which is only three letters, you show 5???
Are you perhaps after 162a open contempt, which is SCORN, with mist and noose being the down words?

that is exactly what I'e done!
contempt is the actual clue - which is scorn.
Tomorrow I'll laugh about it, but I've been researching for a couple of hours now on wildebeest as the clue.
The S I wrote for Mist is going over the number so I was reading the 162 as 163 - gosh I do feel absolutely stupid!
