The National Zoo and Aquarium is one of Australia’s largest private zoos and is located only five minutes from the centre of Canberra. The zoo exhibits a large variety of land and aquatic animals that include everything from lion fish to African lions as well as many other endangered species.

The aquarium is one of the largest inland aquariums in Australia. It features a variety of reptiles such as chameleon lizards, alligators and the largest species of snake in the world. Aquatic animals vary from some of the smallest and most beautiful of the reefs fishes and corals to the large sharks and rays of the deep.

The zoo exhibits a number of endangered species from around the world including some of Australia’s most unique wildlife. The zoos major attractions though would have to be the big cats and bears.

Recently referred to by a Sydney journalist as one of Canberra’s best kept secrets, the zoo is now becoming well known for its award winning behind the scenes tours and interactive experiences.

Designed to provide a unique zoo experience, visitors can take part in one of the many interactive experiences that the zoo has on offer. These interactive experiences vary depending on your interest. The zoo’s resident dingos or bluetongue lizards frequent the park throughout the day which allows visitors to get close to these friendly animals.

And for those of you who are after a little more excitement, the zoo runs a variety of behind the scenes tours and interactive experiences such as the Meet a Cheetah experience that will really provide you with a memorable experience.

Open every day except Christmas Day. On the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, five minutes from the city centre on Lady Denman Drive, next to Scrivener Dam.
