The Boat That Rocked is set on board the fictitious Radio Rock, broadcasting pirate radio – music that was broadcast literally from boats anchored offshore from the coast of Britain – was a peculiarly British response to strict government regulations that rationed the public to a mere two hours of pop music per week. The pirate stations promptly attracted an audience of as many as 25 million people a day – more than half the population of Britain at the time – eager to hear new releases by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Beach Boys and other bands that defined that generation. The comedy stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy and Kenneth Branagh and is directed by Richard Curtis.

Be one of the first to see The Boat That Rocked at a special bmag preview at Dendy Cinemas, Portside Wharf, Hamilton, 6.30pm Monday 6 April.
