Thanks Dark Enigma for posting :)

Just wanted to share a recent experience for those interested in considering cash passports for impending overseas travel. You may not get all the information re costing per transaction and extra losses you'll incur with the exchange rates when cashing money in back on home soil from your financial institution.

Things they won't mention could include.....the charges per transaction by the owner/carrier of the atm's you use over there (if you can only get the atm variety of cash passport) and also that you'll lose a squillion when you go to exchange your monies left over in the card upon exiting.

Recently myself and the wonderful gypsy travelled to Dubai and enjoyed a rate of 3.16 against our aussie dollar whilst in Dubai.... well that was great, but as we didn't spend everything on our nominated amounts with our cash passport, we naturally wanted to cash the money in of course upon arrival....... and doing it in reverse the best rate we could get was 4.65 or thereabouts which meant we were losing more because the money was now converted into ozzie dollars here.

Not to mention the fee for exchange was around $15 + $10 exit fee to get the money from the card and a bank fee on top of that.

We were also told that a cash passport (debit card) wasn't available, hence why we were issued with a cash passport (atm card - for use in atm's only) and only 1 in 3 accepted the Cash passport.

Instead of a quoted AUD $2.50 charge for each atm transaction, it was more like $8-9 ozzie dollars for each. this is for balances as well.

Having an ATM cash passport defeated the purpose of not wanting to carry cash around, as we had to withdraw cash :dork:

Research the country you are travelling to in respect to what individual ATM suppliers will charge you for each transaction in that country if using an ATM card.

And if you're considering a cash passport (Debit card variety, then your own mastercard or visa debit card will suffice nicely.

I hope this helps some of you looking to a cash passport as an option.

Also steer clear of the Bendigo Bank if wishing to check it out, as probably with most of them, they are only an agent, and the whole thing has a mighty large amount of fur on it

On a lighter note :) I hope everyone wins an overseas trip or another one :D soon. Especially to Dubai... it was a great experience :) :) :) :)
