Just had to forfeit a prize I'd been looking forward to ..

I won a 3 day cruise around the great barrier reef last year and had it booked for May. We paid extra to have our young daughter come along and we were really looking forward to it.

But I'm pregnant and when I went to my OB the other day and she said that I've got a low lying placenta and that while it could move up it could still cause a bleed and she doesn't recommend being out on a boat away from hospitals, etc.

Of course the safety of bub and I is more important so we forfeited the cruise (will get the money back for my daughter thankfully, but it isn't transferable so no-one can go in our place ). The flights and accommodation we paid for in Cairns can't be refunded so we are hoping to still do that, if ok with doc.

I know we made the right decision even if a bleed never occurs, but I'm still really disappointed to be missing out on this great cruise that we would never pay to do. (nearly $4,000 for 3 nights...)

I know some of you have probably had to do similar things with prizes and I just wanted to share with people who understand!

You made the right decision, my sister in law has the same thing and she can't go to far at all, she also has 4 children one being only 2 and she isn't allowed to pick him up.

Another opportunity will come along but the safety of your baby and self is what is important xx

Good luck with everything :)

You did make the right decision.
Good to hear you could get a refund on your daughters booking and fingers crossed your well enough to use the trip to Cairns.
Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy.

I would have done the same thing. Baby is far more important and Im sure you will win another holiday later on and then all four of you can go. Good luck to you and your family

Definitely did the right thing. As the uterus expands the placenta can move up with the expanding walls, but you don't know if thats going to happen until later. So you really can't take the risk. I'm just explaining so you don't get upset if a later ultrasound shows the placenta in a good position. It's low now and now is what you have to deal with.
I hope another great win is just around the corner for you.
Congratulations on your pregnancy:yes:

You most definatley did the right thing! I won a $15,000 Thailand holiday from Madison a few years back. I was being monitored for an possible incompetent cervix (even though it hadn't done anything by that stage and no stitch) and would have been 26 weeks pregnant during the holiday. My OB flat out refused to sign anything and said I was not going. Sure enough at 26 weeks I went into prem labour with my son. My OB managed to stop it but her first comment to me as she walked in the room was not hello but "aren't you glad, you're not in Thailand?"

We pay them a great deal of money for their opinion as they know what they are talking about. I feel your pain, but everything happens for a reason ;)

I understand what a disappointment it would be. I hope you win something even better to take it's place. Hope that darn placenta gets in the right position for you soon :)
I know there are t&c's to go by, but you'd think in extenuating circumstances they could stretch the rules a bit and let you do it later. Especially as you could supply a doctors/specialists certificate or letter that proved you weren't just making it up.

How disappointing.

I'm pregnant at the moment and have a low lying placenta. My OB has given me similar instructions.

I hope you win something amazing soon to make up for it.

It's a shame that the company wasn't able to work something out with you regarding the cruise!

So disappointing for you Sierrasun, you made the right decision. When the time is right, the comping gods will send you something lovely to make up for it.
You take good care of yourself and your bub.

Thats dissapointing, its a shame it cannot be transferred, would be nice if they offered you a consellation prize or something that you were able to use. I know that P&O dont allow pregnant women to cruise if you are over 24 weeks, not sure about other cruise lines.

Baby first - you'll have another opportunity. Best of luck!

Definately wise not to go but if you have travel insurance you should be able to claim with a letter from the doctor ???
posted 31-3-2012 @ 08:46 AM www

Of course you dont the right thing, there really wasn't a choice was there. But I understand your disappointment of not being able to take the trip you was looking forward to so much.
I would look into the possiblity of claiming through the travel insurance also, but they may claim it was pre-exhisting, but worth a shot.

If there is no chance possible that the cruise company wont allow you to go another time (by negotiation with them and not the promoter) then I hope you have another opportunity in the future. Maybe and even bigger win will come your way so you get to enjoy that long awaited family trip.

I hope everything goes smoothly with the pregnancy. All the best.

Something else will come up for you, an even better trip!

I always look on the positive side, maybe there was an underlying reason you were not meant to go that you may never know about.

Good things will replace the trip, wait and see ;)

Last year I won a trip to the US, asked for the prize to be given to someone else as my MIL was dying. No regrets as we got to spend a little more time with her before she passed away. There will be more wins :).

I think you have definitely done the right thing. Dsappointing not to be able to go, but the health of you and bubba are the absolute priorities. All the best with your pregnancy & good luck with winning a great holiday when the time is right. :)

I just received a beautiful surprise bouquet of flowers - from the promoter - wishing me well with the baby and saying sorry I would be missing the cruise.

What a lovely thing for them to do!:thumbup::thumbup::)

That was so nice of them. I remember a few years ago I won a trip to Japan to the opening of a movie and a meet and greet with Tom Cruise but couldn't go, was disappointed but my Dad's health was more important.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the well wishes and comments.

I thought I'd let you all know that 5 days before I was due to go on this trip that I'd lost out on I got a phone call to say I'd won a trip for 4 to Fiji! (yep 4 - the whole family ;)) Then the day before I was due to go another call for a $5,000 eftpos card. It was such great timing to win these two great prizes! The Fiji trip is my biggest win to date, and the $5,000 my first cash prize!
