Underfloor Heating
A friend of mine is buying a house which has underfloor heating. I think it's electric because I don't think there is gas in the area, other than
bottled gas.
They don't move in for a couple of months, but I'm a little suspicious as to how much it is going to cost them to run. It sounds really expensive
to me.
I was wondering whether any Lottoers have underfloor heating and what they have found regarding the cost of running it. |

I think you mean ducted heating.
Mine is supplied by gas, but runs off electric to use the fan.
Highly if expensive if ran all day, which I refuse to do.
I never have mine on during the day unless son is home from school, during winter.
If hers is electric she will be up for megar dollars during winter

The underfloor (non ducted) is a bit expensive to run. My uncle has it in the bathrooms and lounge/dining as he lives in the snowies. He has invested
in solar power now though, so is getting money back from the grid. Depends where they are though, as it might not be necessary to have it on much.

Just wondering if you are referring to "slab heating" or "ducted heating" merivale ?

They had underfloor heating in the last church we attended before we changed cities. I would lay the baby on the carpet on the floor and she would
just sleep snugly. Lovely. Made you want to take your shoes off. I can't comment on cost except to say there is no fan so that would help keep costs
down. In some countries it is run on thermal heat from deep undeground so is free once it is laid.

I have hydronic heating in the slab that runs on gas, though the heating is fantastic, it costs alot to run, so I would say the electricity bill would
be quite high. It's only my second year in the house but last year over winter my gas bill was $700!! My average gas bill is $250.
The thing with the slab heating is that you turn it on at the begining of the cold season and leave it on, it's not instant heat like ducted it takes
a day for the hosue to warm up.
I would neve change it though, it heats up the house beautifully, and theres no dust like ducted.

We have slab heating and love it. Our whole house is electric and our bills work out to about $500 per month which is a lot. The bill is a bit higher
in winter with the heating on, but if you put that against running air-conditioning in summer it's not that much more.
We have been in this house for over 20 years and we never get colds in winter!

We had in floor heating in a previous house we owned, it was VERY expensive to run.
I have it in my current house but have never turned it on
The problem I found with it is that it wasn't instantaneous, it takes a while to heat up. I loved that the floor was warm on your feet, but I would
not consider putting it in my house if I was going to build a new home

Sounds good. I wonder if they installed solar panels if this would cover the cost ... and what amount of solar panels would they need ... a LOT I
think!

We have electric under floor heating too and since the house is 55 squares since we brought it we have never been game to turn it on. The previous
owner said his electricity bills where around $5,000 with it on

Ohhh I would love underfloor heating! My parents have their bathrooms done but the builder failed to do their entire house (and of course once it's
built it's too late!) I love their bathrooms... I go and lay on the tiled bathroom floor hahaha

The first time I experienced it I found it really weird having toasty warm feet and sitting on an ice cold toilet seat

It's a good idea to steer right away from electric heating, underfloor is very expensive and will get much worse with the Carbon Tax. Electric bills
have been estimated to go up by twice the current rate once CT is established. Everything electric will become a massive burden on everyone. Solar
panels will ease the pain. Electric heating is the last thing I'd consider.
