Kindle or e-Reader recommendations ?
Hi guys
I've got some e-books and currently read them on my netbook computer. Now it's colder I find I want to lay down to read and it's a bit tricky with
the computer.
I'm looking to get an e-Reader and think Kindle is what I'm gong to get - an advice or recommendations?
I've done a bit of research and have come up with Kindle based on the design, thickness, and the covers - have read they have both normal and a touch
version - not sure which is better though. To me, I don't necessarily need the touch option, guess it depends on how the price differs.
I need something that reads PDF for the current files I have. I also have some in .Lit which the Microsoft Reader software opens; and some in
EPub.
I think Big W sells them now, but not sure about Kmart or Target.
thanks in advance, Nicole |

I love my kindle. I have the most basic model and find it does all I need. I download my books via the computer so a touch screen or keypad were
unnecessary.
I have only read one book in pdf format and it wasn't as good. I get books already in format for the kindle usually.
Someone more technically minded may have a better way of doing it however.
One thing to keep in mind is that you will need a light if you want to read in bed at night. The screen is not backlit.
Have fun!

You aren't going to be able to enjoy pdf files on a kindle. I have both a kindle and an ipad that I use for ereading. For pdfs I use an ipad. I
also have a kobo ereader which may aswell go in the bin, it's pretty awful to use in comparison to a kindle.
I love the kindle though (I have the version 4 with no keyboard that is not touch). It's a wonderful thing. People who have the touch usually
complain that it is slow.
The best thing about the kindle is this website http://www.ereaderiq.com
and it lists the free kindle books each day (updates each hour) you just click on the buy the book link on the website and within a minute or so the
book is on your kindle. I get atleast 5-10 free ebooks a day from this website (books that are free are totally different each day) and I always
have a huge collection of free books that I can read when I have time.
If you get a kindle ($100) you may also want a case with a light ($60 dick smith) - the case is brilliant, but it's a lot of money but so cleverly
designed. My hubby has the previous kindle (3 - the one with keyboard) and also has the case with light with that, but he only uses his ipad to read
ebooks now.
The other thing with the kindle - is you wont be able to borrow library ebooks (you can do this with an ipad - overdrive is the name of the software,
plus need adobe digital editions on your PC) - in the US the libraries there use the overdrive system with the kindle, but in Australia libraries who
use overdrive (most of them I think) don't use kindle versions. So if you want to read local library ebooks (and this is a fabulous service) it wont
work on a kindle.
The kobo I have can read library ebooks and works with adobe digital editions.
No idea if I've answered your question, a kindle is nice, but isn't going to do what you want.
Going to that ereaderiq website each day and getting free books is such a brilliant thing, that a kindle is worth it just for that (in my opinion).

I have a Kindle and I absolutely cannot live without it. I have one of the older ones, so no touch-screen (I can't see why you would need a touch
screen necessarily) but it is so convenient. I bought the one without Wi-Fi which is fine as Amazon connects you free of charge to their network
nearly anywhere in the world and you can download books very quickly.
I don't know about the other e-readers but the Kindle screen doesn't reflect light so it doesn't matter whether you're reading in direct sunlight
or not - you don't get the glare coming off the screen. The only thing is that the screen isn't back-lit like a computer, so you must have some sort
of light to be able to read (like reading a normal book). I prefer that though as you aren't straining your eyes so much - goodness knows how much
time we spend on our computers as it is!
The other great thing is that you can download excerpts of books as well so you can decide whether you like it before you buy.
I found it most convenient while I was travelling as I am quite a quick reader, so by the time I got to my transit destination I found that I wanted
to buy another book and all I had to do was buy it through my Kindle. No need to worry about carrying excess weight, etc.
The other fantastic thing about the Kindle is that if you have finished reading the first book in a series at 3:00am for example, and you REALLY
REALLY feel like you must start reading the second book, it takes you seconds to click, buy and start reading. Have been guilty of that a few times!!

I believe the Kindle has no problems reading PDF files (when you hook it up to your computer it is quite simple - just 'drag and drop' folders) but
I don't know about the .Lit and EPub files - you might have to do some reading up on that.
Hope that helps!

Thanks guys.
I've been reading up and the Calibre software can convert .lit files to html and then to Mobi for the Kindle. One site I read also said from Mobi you
can export from the computer by usb or email direct to the Kindle.
I also found info about optimising Pdf files, but on another form they said Pdf files read fine.
Looks like the Kindle is a go, and I already had my eye on a cover with a light on Ebay.

Has anyone ever got a Sony e-reader and thought "I should have got a kindle," or vice versa? Got a Kindle and wished for something else?
Sorry to ask the same sort of question again - it's just that I'm going to buy one or the other on Tuesday, and I'm STILL weighing up the options!!

I don't have one but have heard great things about the kindle fire. Its an e-reader but also effectively a tablet etc. Its not all that much more
than the standard kindle. I have a toshiba tablet (as it came free with my laptop) I love the kindle aspect of it but also as a computer for
travelling, but beyond the kindle ap pre-loaded & the internet, I'm not sure how to use the rest of it. It however is a lot heavier and larger
than a kindle or an ipad.

I have 3 ereaders.
Won a Kobo Wifi (the old one with the button and Kobos' read epubs), loved it but got sick of hearing the button click everytime I pressed it and it
was slow
I upgraded to a Kobo Touch and love it, I don't find it slow to turn the page but I tend to tap or swipe before I finish the page.
Won a Kindle 4 (non touch) which is good but I always come back to reading on the Kobo touch for choice, love the feel of it over the Kindle and I
must feel more comfortable with my hand positions on the Kobo.
Nicolejane, Adelaide City Council Library has ebooks you can borrow but only with a Kobo or Sony through ADE as previously mentioned. Their selection
is slowly growing.

I do think it's easier to get free books for the Kindle, I also use the website Spongebob mentions and download a number of free books each day but
when looking on the Amazon website when a book says 'Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited' it means they can be used on any device, you just use
'Calibre' to convert to epub.
Just a thought... the Kindle can sort books by 'collections' but the Kobo can't. It doesn't matter for me as the Kobo displays the covers when you
search it, I'm quite visual like that and can remember a book by it's cover. To see the Kindle covers you need to click onto each individual book,
otherwise it just displays the titles.
The Kindle does have a better battery life in my opinion though.
You just have to think about where and how you are going to get your ebooks and if you want the library option. I personally think you'll love what
ever you buy and won't regret it.
All the ereaders are used in this family

I have heard good things about the Kindle Fire. It depends on your personal needs.

Kindles were on special in Victoria in Woolworths for $98. I think that the special finishes on the 26th (tomorrow) but I am not certain.

On the weekend was chatting to my friend who has been through three kobos and she said they all broke. She's got a kindle now (keyboard one). Her
husband went and bought them kobos each the moment they were available in Australia, and they both had to keep getting new kobos as the old ones would
break. She said she is much happier with the kindle.

Love love love my kindle. I was worried that I would miss reading a physical book but I got my kindle in October last year and haven't read a
"normal" book since then.

Basic kindle here without touch screen. Perfect for me. About to travel overseas tomorrow and it is so easy to take that with my 60 plus books on it
rather than trying to take a couple of books.
