SCHOOL KIDS BONUS - Centerlink Payments due NOW !!
SCHOOL KID BONUS - Centerlink Payments this fortnight. I haven't heard much talk or discussion about this so Im not sure if many of you know. The
school kid bonus is being paid into parents accounts this fortnight. If you receive family tax benefit part A you will automatically recieve this
bonus on your very next payment. This will include up to $820 for each secondary school student and $410 for each student in primary school.
http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/information/schoolkids-bonus
This is being paid because very few people claimed the education tax refund since its introduction. If you are one of these who haven't claimed for
the cost of your kids schooling, why not call the tax office, you probably can still claim for last years.
Expenses you can claim are internet costs, laptops, hard drives, usb, printers, ink, school uniforms, stationary etc.
After this year parents will not have to claim and keep receipts it will be automatically paid in two instaments each year. |

Me too judew79. I always pay mine after getting my tax refund, after the warning letters. So this will pay the school fees, and each year they
continue it I will pay the fees at the start of the year now
I know what you mean comper girl, hell I might even be able to pay the sport fees too

Mine was paid into my daughter's account!
When your kids turn 16 they take your Family Payment off you and pay it to them to try & keep them in school! It's a good idea and kids can't
get unemployment benefits under 18 years of age unless they're studying. "Earning or Learning". Miss 17 is now half way through Year 12 and it's
been good having the fortnightly payment going directly to her - but I could have done with the bonus!
I was better off the old way - taking in my bills & receipts for internet usage, printer inks, the laptop we bought this year etc. when having my
tax done.
My brother has three boys in school but as he and his wife both work they are not elligible for Family Tax Benefit so won't be getting a payment at
all. They had bought two computers over the past twelve months with the Education Rebate in mind but now it doesn't seem that they'll be able to
claim at all!
Don't know how they can change the rules mid-year!
Oh well, I'm sure it's worked out better for most!

All my payment have always gone into my account still even when my kids turned over 16. Im glad it goes into my account cause otherwise they would
just waste it and this way it goes towards school fees etc

Not sure about that! Taking the payment off the parent when child turns 16. I work at Centrelink and as far as I know the parent should still get
the payment. That doesn't sound right to me but I will check that out on Monday as if they have suddenly changed it I need to know. Centrelink
payments are usually paid to the parent at least until the child turns 18.
EDIT: She may get Youth Allowance.????

Thanks jackpot - I'd be interested to know what they say!!
She is definitely on Youth Allowance Student, since she turned 16 and at the same time my Family Tax Benefit stopped, so to me it was taken off me and
given to her! It was really hard to adjust without that money to start with, but she is pretty sensible with it, as well as having a casual job so I
don't have to pay for much at all for her now.
Pretty annoyed that Bonus was paid to her though - most of her friends got it too and they didn't even know why they had so much money in their
accounts! One just assumed her work had overpaid her by $1000!! How many 16, 17 & 18 year olds who really do waste every cent have a lot of
extra money to blow this week! Not really how the government intended it to be I don't think.
But you're right LisaBart - it is a lucky country! You only have to look at Europe and the rest of the world to realise how lucky we are.

When your children turns 16 centrelink send you a letter and you have a choice to stay on family payment or go to youth allowance. Or the child can
apply for youth allowance themselves. Most people weigh up which one suits them better usually the youth allowance is a bit more than the family
payment so some opt for that. Youth allowance gets paid directly to the child unless the child agrees to have it paid into the parents bank account.
Hope that helps.

Yes my 18 year old receives Youth Allowance and the money is paid into our accounts by choice, he still lives at home but his lifestyle costs us
bucketloads. He has a part-time job and pays for various things througout the year including his schoolies trip to Lorne which I said is an
extravagance which he has to find the money for.

With regards to Youth Allowance or FTB you really need to discuss which is better with someone from Centrelink as they are both based on parental
income at that age.
The maximum rate of Family Tax Benefit for a 16-19 yr old FTS is now $214.06 and Youth Allowance is $220 but with FTB you may be entitled to extras
such as Family Tax Benefit Part B, Rent Assistance and the Family Tax Benefit Supplement payments. You really can't say which is best for someone
without knowing their circs.
There is a comparison calculator and answers to questions re YAL vs FTB at
http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/individuals/ftb_parent_faq.htm#anchor12
If the child has a part-time job their earnings do not affect the FTB that you receive AT ALL until they turn 19 but if they receive Youth Allowance
it does. Also FTB is non taxable and YAL is taxable (not that that matters as it's not that much really is it).
SO definitely people shouldn't assume Youth Allowance is better as in a huge amount of cases you'll get more with Family Tax Benefit.

Could that be your carbon tax payment? Maybe your education bonus is still coming?

I would have thought you would have got half of the $410 as they have only been to school for half a year

Do those of us who don't have any kids get any 'payoff' for the carbon tax....or rewarded for not having kids??
Seems money flies all over the place to couples with kids; not much going to singles/singles with no kids, even though we are ALL trying to work, live
& pay our bills.
