Thinking of starting a running regime

Hi I am thinking of starting a running habit with my 15 year old daughter so that we can both get fitter. Starting very slow and building up. Does anyone have any advice or web references?

Cheers

Me too! I hate running but have heard great things about the book C25K (couch to 5 k) which works slowly to help you build up from a non runner to a 5k run. Have a look at www.myfitnesspal.com for inspiration from those who have been there. I need to get back into a regular workout then am going to tackle the c25k book.

Good on you lucymorgan! There is a nine week program on the Body+Soul website -

Otherwise there are some great apps for smart phones - Couch to 5K & RunKeeper are worth a look at.

As I've said before, I believe running is something you do when you are being chased.

There may be a running group in your State that runs beginners groups for advice and motivation at various times/locations during the week. In SA there are groups run by SA Road Runners that help get you started.

Definitely recommend c25k - I alwys thought running was not my thing but I got up to week 7 of the program and then did a 6km fun run in 35 mins. The first time I did week1 day 1, I only managed 6 out of the 8 runs as I was going way too fast and had to keep walking for runs 4 and 8 - make sure you pace yourself. It's a really nicely graduated program but if you don't feel ready to step up to the next week, it's okay to repeat an extra day or even the whole week (3 days) before upping your time/distance.

I've restarted a few times after taking breaks from running for various reasons and can usually miss week 1 - I'm currently back up to week 4. Signing up for an event is a great motivator as you've paid your money so you might as well go - lots of people do a combo of running and walking. I'm currently aiming for a 5km fun run in November.

If I'm in bad mood or need to clear my head, eg after a stressful day at work, I go for a run as it helps enormously. If nothing else, I often have to concentrate so hard on breating and putting one foot in front of the other to get back home that I've not no energy left for being grumpy! :P

Lots of resources including apps and podcasts at http://www.c25k.com - I used to listen to podcasts but now I have a smart phone I use the Android app c25k pro along with some favourite music as well as MapMyRun+ to track how far I go (you can also use the MMR website to manually enter your route if you don't have a smart phone or if the GPS doesn't work as happens sometimes).

Sounds like a great idea, and having someone else motivate you and each other is even better!!
Ive got neuropathy so running doesnt really agree with me.
Ive joined a gym along with my hubby and a friend and have lost 4kg in 4 weeks, and feeling fitter already. We all motivate each other, especially if one of us trys to get out of going :)
For some reason I am finding this much easier to stick to than walking the block or getting on the tredmill at home.

I did it years ago and lost a lot of weight just wish I could get back into it but I used to have markers like electricity poles and try and run to the next one each other day gradually building up I would walk the rest of my rout then.

Yep, another fan of C25K (I use the app, but you can also get podcasts) and signing up for running events. I (well my 14 year old daughter and I) only do the running events which give you medals LOL!! I like my running bling. Events where you get tshirts are good too, as you can wear those thsirts when you are training for the next event.

I got into really into it last year, but haven't done anywhere near as much this year as running flares up my asthma something shocking. My asthma (which is usually dormant) is excellent this year (barely had to use my puffer) but I was living on it constantly when I was running all the time. So I need to find another exercise to do that doesn't flare up my asthma!! I don't think running is wise for me sadly.

I've been planning on starting a morning jog again for months. I ""WILL"" start tomorrow morning :) its time I stopped the excuses.
A friend of mine downloaded and ap called Run Keeper on my phone. It seams alright. I also have started using an ap called My Fitness Keeper which traks your calorie intake and also your weightloss and fitness activities.
I will see if I can download at C25K ap too. Sounds great.

I'll let you know tomorrow if I done my run. Thanks for reminding and inspiring me to get into it. Lots of lottoers have lost weight recently. Its all been inspiring.

Thanks for all the tips and encouragement!!! (love your comment mcwinner :D:D:D)

I downloaded c25k to our iphones and you are right - it is great.

Be careful on a pc though - one of the sites about c25k gave me a virus (file c25k_free.com, trojan-downloader.js) - zonealarm has dealt with it.
