Migraines/ headaches

I just wanted to know if any of you suffer from migraines?
If so, do you have any idea what causes them, or do you have any sure fire tips for preventing them? or even any sure fire ways of stopping them once you have one start?

I'm finding with being tired and with the weather changing (barometric pressure changes, or humid weather) that I am guaranteed one. the past seven days alone I have had three!
Mine are really not too bad though in the scheme of things, I've heard some peoples last for days.. mine are usually ok within a few hours, after a sleep or after a Mersyndol tablet, but I can't take those at work because they make me really drowsy.
any tips would be met with much delight/squealing and/or hi-fiving.
;)

I have been a migraine sufferer for many year but thankfully the severity of my attacks has quietened down also the frequency lately.

I have tried many preventative medications but all they did was stack on the weight. Then a couple of years ago a new Dr got me to try Periactin which is an antihistamine drug. I take one of these every night & I have improved heaps. It may not work for you but ask your Dr about giving it a try.

I always felt hormones triggered my migraines & I do believe that menopause may have also contributed to the improvement as this was the case with both my Mum & Grandma.

My biggest gripe now is that if I feel an attack coming on, I was always able to take one Cafergot tablet with two Aspro Clear (the 500mgs tabs) & relief was soon available. BUT now Cafergot has been taken off the market & I can't find anything that will replace them. I cannot take anything with Codeine in it so that stops some of the stronger over the counter drugs.

I did try Mersyndol many years ago when my migraines were severe and they didn't help. Maybe I should give them another try.

The stronger Aspro Clear (500mgs) does help alot for me. I may as well drink water than take Panadol.

Migraine makes life extremely miserable and I hope you can find some answers that will suit you.

I gave up caffeine and they stopped. I use to get them so bad, even putting my head on the pillow hurt. Had them daily. Still get headaches but never had a migraine again.

Just read your post Geelong Sally, Hubby swears by Cafergot and takes them as soon as he feels a migraine starting, I was not aware it is no longer available. He is sure to pass out when he hears that news!

luckymum49 ,

I can tell you that I was not at all impressed - when I found something that worked, I wasn't happy my remedy was taken from me

I've found hormones cause mine, when I was pregnant didn't have one, also food triggers them, cheese, eggs, chocolate, and a biggie orange juice, like pinkyeeyore caffeine if I have too much but can still have one a day. Also if I'm dehydrated, so drinks heaps of water, especially with the heat coming on.

I swear by aspalgin it does contain codine though , so alot of people cant take them.
I suffered bad but now as soon as I feel it coming on I take 2 dissovled in a glass of water.
I never leave home without them . Also they are over the counter tables

My migraines are hormonal and started when I was 33. Used to get a migraine every 2 months. Constant vomiting, nausea and severe throbbing headache.

Trial and error sorted my diet. No meat or chicken at all. I only eat fish. That lessened the frequency down to 1 migraine a year. Much better now I'm menopausal.

When I have a migraine, I can't take any tablet no matter what it is as I just vomit before it does any good. So was wonderful when the doctor put me on to Imigran nasal spray. Stops the vomiting immediately, I lie down and have a sleep and when I wake up the headache is completely gone. Still find I have a little nausea when I wake up but at least no headache. Bit spacey for the rest of the day. No way could I go to work, even having the medication as I wouldn't be safe to drive, or look after my clients. I'm a disability worker.

Hope you find what works for you. Migraines and their triggers seem to be very individual and what works for one person, won't work for another.

you're right munchkin.
I'm intrigued about the imigran though. I havent heard of that??
I am *usually* fine with the tablets because I can generally catch them before I get to the throwing up stage. not always though. most of the time if i dont catch it, its because i am out and about. usually my body is screaming for me to just sleep, but obviously you cant just stop and have a nap at work, or while looking after the kids etc.
i think mine have alot to do with dehydration and sleep, so perhaps the dehydration may be the trigger when the weather is humid??
but also, Kia, I just realised when I was pregnant with my second daughter i only had about 2 headaches the entire time... hmmmm... I currently have a Mirena IUD though, so dont know how that would affect hormones?

it seems too hard. i feel like scooping out my brain and leaving it somewhere...

I also suffer from migraines..have done on and off for 21 years.
I have found many different triggers....orange juice, especially if combined with chocolate (although I've never been able to give up choccy, lol), hormones, birth control, heat, bright light, bad posture and even laughing or crying too much bring one on.
I have also suffered different kinds of migraines....some with the pounding in my temple, blurred vision and nausea....some with just the vision impairment and nausea, without the head pain...and some that affect my balance and partially paralyze one side of my body. Because of these latter ones, my neurologist said I can't take any form of migraine preventative meds, otherwise I could have a stroke.
So my only relief has been the usual...strong pain killers, dark room and as much water as I can keep down.
I don't know if Cafergot tablets actually have caffeine in them (just sounds like it from the name), but I have actually found lately that if I have a strong coffee, it eases the pain. So much so, that if hubby sees me coming down with a migraine, he will zip into the nearest coffee shop, lol.
And I'm not a caffeine addict...I drink herbal tea, and rarely drink cola drinks, and only have coffee whenever I can get one (don't have a coffee machine at home, and am lactose intolerant....instant coffee tastes like crap with soy milk!), so it's strange that caffeine would work like that, but I'm grateful.

My 8 yr old son started having migraines 3 mths ago. He was waking up with them every morning and having them every night for 2 months. They performed an MRI and found that he had an anomaly in the main vein in his brain...part of it was missing, and the other part was enlarged. (I think they call it a venous angioma, or an arteriovenous malformation) They are still not convinced that this is the cause of his migraines, and have put him on Deralin (propranolol) tablets as a preventative measure. They seem to be working, but I don't like the idea of him being on them for ever. :(

I've been a bad migrane suffer all my life. I've been on most prescribed medicines over the years with some side effects worse than the migrane itself:mad: Nothing worked well until a Chinese friend gave me some 'Esic Body Spa' to rub on my temples .........this stuff is unreal, it's natural and has instant relief.

It is prescription and also comes in tablet form and injectible form.

The best thing I like about the nasal spray is that I don't have to leave the house to see a doctor when I get a migraine. Before I started using the nasal spray, it was always a doctor's visit and injection needed.

I used to take something called sandomigrin?

When I was at school I had a ritual of eating a mars bar & OJ each day for morning tea. By lunch time I was in so much pain. Took me ages to make the connection. Stopped the habit & the pain stopped.

I found that the glare of the sun gave me migraines. After investing in a GOOD pair of sunglasses it stopped.

I get constant bad headaches (fortunately not migraines, though my son gets them) and have found that a "Migrastick" really helps relieve them without having to resort to tablets. It is a tiny light green roll on stick (like a deodorant roll on) which you use on various points of your head and neck ... smells strongly of peppermint and is icy cold. You can carry it around in your bag and it is there whenever you need it.

I've suffered with migraines for over 30 years, changes to barometric pressure really play havoc for me as well as having discs in my neck that are degenerating. I've found that a migrastick helps sometimes but what usually gets rid of a migraine for me is a tablet a friend told me about called Fiorinal, as well as having a sleep in a darkened room.

When I worked and got migrains I started using the migrastick. I was actually asked not to use it anymore because of the smell. People did not like it. Go figger.

Oh Migraines migraines migraines.
The bane of my life.

I have been suffering migraines since I was 14. Well that's what I thought until I found an old school journal I wrote in year 7 which described exactly a migraine. So since I was 12 and I am now 32.

At first I thought they were triggered by my hormones but as I have gotten older they have gotten worse. I used to get one about every 6 months, then it became 3 months, then 1 month, now i really don't know. My worst spell was when I had 5 in one week!

My symptoms are blurry vision in one eye (can be either one) and then the headache comes on. Once the headache appears the only thing I can do is sleep. A mersyndol usually helps with this.

I have done sooooooo much research on migraines. I have been to see my GP and she has run a myriad of tests on me. I have had brain scans, kidney scans (your renal artery not functioning properly can cause blood pressure issues and in turn migraines) the works!

I have been prescribed the medication which you take when you first get the vision (can't remember what it is called) and it never worked. I have been told to take this pain relief and that pain relief. To no avail!

I have tried taking foods out of my diet. I even went onto a total macrobiotic diet at one stage. Didn't help.

I have learned that I have to live with my migraines. They don't know why people get them and there is no cure.

At the moment I am going pretty well with them. I have hyper tension (an inherited thing) and so I am on a blood pressure medication called Inderal which my GP prescribed to me for the blood pressure and also because that brand has a beta blocker in there which is meant to help in the prevention of my migraines. I have also added a daily vitamin tablet to my regime and since I am taking these 2 things my migraines have come right down.

I am lucky because my boss is pretty understanding and so when I get one I can call in sick and sleep all day. Or go home if it starts at work. That was a bad week when I had 5!

All as I have found and this is what my neurologist even told me is try everything everyone suggests. Migraines are quite personal and what works for one person may not work for another. In the end he told me the only thing I can do is manage my pain when I get them and try to avoid bright lights and stress as these can be triggers.

Goodluck and I hope you can find what works for you.
