COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THE DEMON? :)

45D-Big-game shooting platform
117A-Compact but elegant
and
124D-WW11 Sonar

Having a few difficulties with those ones.
Thx heaps to whomever can help :)

OneCLICKwonder - 5-3-2009 @ 03:50 PM

Hi raish

The answers you need are:

45 down - MACHAN

117 across - BIJOU

124 down - ASDIC

I would be interested to know what you put for what seems like a simple answer at 106 down (INSPIRE) ?

Dutchy's opinion would be great too.....:)

Don't hesitate to ask if you need any further help. Always happy to lend a hand. I have completed all crosswords.

GOOD LUCK :) OCW

OneCLICKwonder - 5-3-2009 @ 03:58 PM

Hi carolgal

For Page 22 - Elevenses 1

My answer is: RELATION

(17a = ApprOpriate & 18a = ScaNdalises....you need the O and the N)

GOOD LUCK :) OCW

Dutchy - 6-3-2009 @ 01:47 AM

Hi oneCLICKwonder.

I confirm your three submissions.

For 106d I have EVOKE

Just completed the new Colossus 121, I reckon the Stinker is one of the hardest I've done for a long time!

Good luck

OneCLICKwonder - 6-3-2009 @ 11:05 AM

Hi dutchy....

Thanks for your opinion on 126down.....EVOKE.....that's what I put as well but I'm not so sure. To inspire really isn't to evoke???
___________________________
NOTES:

invoke is to call upon or appeal to something or someone for help or inspiration, while evoke is to bring or call something to the conscious mind; evoke is from Latin evocare 'to call out' while invoke is from invocare 'to call on'
provoke means to stir up or arouse - or to incite to anger or resentment; evoke means to call forth or call to mind emotions, feelings, and responses.
____________________________

What do you think? If 117across is BIJOU then I guess it has to be EVOKE but I can't find anywhere where INSPIRE is a synonym for EVOKE.

Mmmmmmm??????

Dutchy - 6-3-2009 @ 12:08 PM

Hi oneCLICKwonder

I'm quite happy with EVOKE. Although like you I can't find a direct synonym there are plenty of indirect synonyms which link both words.

From my Reader's Digest Word Finder:
INSPIRE = induce, produce, stimulate, arouse.

EVOKE = induce, produce, stimulate, arouse.

Until someone can convince me otherwise I'm sticking with EVOKE.

dawn1004 - 9-3-2009 @ 01:40 PM

Phew.... finally sat down for the evening to finish off the Demon.

I was rather wary of this months due to the talk of it being hard.

It was a doozy!

48d was the hardest for me, but finally found the answer.

62a was one I'd never heard of, but I kinda guessed that one, (not sure how!) although was a little hesitant of typing it into google to confirm, just in case some rather lewd pages came up!!!!

Good luck with this one to all who enter, this one would be an achievement to win, just an achievement to finish it!

OneCLICKwonder - 10-3-2009 @ 01:37 PM

Hi dutchy

Thanks for your confirmation of EVOKE.

There really can be no other answer with the letters available and your indirect synonyms are pretty convincing.

I've sent in my entry now and will be very interested to see the answer. :)

miakeira - 11-3-2009 @ 11:03 PM

63d = CHAOTIC

miakeira - 15-3-2009 @ 11:07 AM

in The Demon, is 62 across cock-a-hoop and is 63 down frantic?
Also I ant get 48 down unscrupulous promotion or 31 down vatican civil service. many thanks for help. :P

miakeira - 15-3-2009 @ 11:09 AM

sorry, I just saw your reply. cock-a-hoop is right, chaotic instead of frantic. i never heard of hucksterism . MANYMANY THANKS Dutchy. :P:D

miakeira - 15-3-2009 @ 09:29 PM

i looked up Hucksterism. I was on the wrong track. i was only thinking about promotion as being promoted in a job, but it was a sales promotion!....

Dutchy - 15-3-2009 @ 10:08 PM

You could almost call Christine Lovatt a "huckster".:P

booksymurri - 20-3-2009 @ 01:03 PM

I'm new to sending in crossword puzzles and was curious about spelling. Do we need to spell with Australian/British spelling or can we use USA or either? Why do I ask? Because I can't figure out how to spell traumatises/traumatizes for the Goliathon 3down.
It is s or z here in Australia? Do the judges care?

Cheers and happy comping

OneCLICKwonder - 20-3-2009 @ 02:15 PM

Hi booksymurri

With the Lovatt's books, they always say use the "S" for words like those you have mentioned rather than the "Z".

GOOD LUCK :) OCW

booksymurri - 21-3-2009 @ 02:08 AM

Thanks I was stumped on what to put. There are so many helpful people at this forum.

Cheers
