What do you (or would you) spend prize money on
Hi Everyone,
I hope everyone is doing OK. Sending especial wishes to the Melbourne and Mitchell Shire members going in to lockdown again today.
I have something I'm curious about : if you win 'cash' or say a visa card in a comp, how do you treat the money and what do you (or would you) like to
spend it on. Does it just go into your daily grocery budget to make that month a bit easier? is it mad money? is it automatically assigned to your
favourite treat or retail therapy - shoes? the holiday budget? gifts for friends? do you allocate some to a favourite charity or allow yourself a
flutter on the horses?
I'm curious what people spend their prizes on when they actually have full flexibility. |

I haven't won lots of cash but the bit that dribbles i ...
We have purchased all battery operated lawn mower, blow vac, other gardening items using the same battery and other house items.
I have sold items to purchase house items.
So in short i like to use the money to get items that we wouldn't normally get but I can say my comping provided.
If I win grocery cards I use themcarefully and try to get item to enter more comps so it's hopefully a win win. |

I have only ever won $50 or $100 lots and they just go towards general household runnings which no doubt all other larger winnings if they ever happen
would do similar. |

I once won a $5000 Visa card and a Discovery Holiday Camping card ( which gave us 13 nights in every Discovery park in Australia). We went on a road
trip, using the accommodation and the Visa card for petrol and food. It was great. But for minor ones, it varies...sometimes a treat I wouldn't
normally buy, or shouting the family something, or groceries. |

A few years ago I was lucky enough to win $10K work of Coles gift cards (MKR comp) and I used them to buy the weekly groceries but put the money I
would have used from the household budget into another account and used the money for a family holiday in North Queensland for 10 days; being from a
regional area, and interstate, the airfares used a big chunk but it was one of the best holidays we'd ever been on. We did loads of things and had the
best time; We'll always remember it. |

I haven't won big money for many years, but I've always used the smaller supermarket gift cards for better quality than I would normally buy, eg
icecream, and for comp purchases of items I plan to donate or ditch.
Way back in my early comping days I won $500 of Woolworths vouchers, in small denominations. They were paper ones, the same as those used as food
vouchers given by charities. I used them to buy some luxury items, and couldn't understand the hostility of the checkout staff, until someone in the
queue hissed at me about my inappropriate use of handouts. I learnt fast to say very loudly that I was so lucky to win them when I approached the
cashier. It really deterred me from entering gift card comps for many years. And I was very saddened by the judgmental attitude of staff and shoppers
to perceived charity cases. Things must be hard enough without getting comments on your lifestyle. |

I won $5000 at Xmas, and then $3000 early this year. I paid some money back that I owed, bought a lot of plants (!!!!) hahahah and the rest just
vanished as it does if you don't keep an eye on it. I don't really feel bad as I wouldn't have had it otherwise, so wherever it went so be it |

Mine all goes towards household running including of course product purchase required comps, I'm not into buying stuff I don't need so my bank balance
slowly increases giving us peace of mind as we age. Other than cash and cards all other prize winnings over 23 years have been shared with our large
family. |

Last year I won $1,000 spending money as part of a NZ trip win. I used the money towards upgrading our accommodation. The original accommodation
provided/selected by the promoter had damning reviews of TripAdvisor. Money well spent! |

I have won $5,000 plus a few other cash prizes, almost always my cash wins go towards essentials, which makes things easier in long run. At the time
one of my cash wins was a total god send, my hubby had lost his job, we needed to downsize our house, so it covered alot of costs to sell our home and
move. Wins do really happen for a reason. |

I'm still waiting to win a cash prize, but usually when there is a words-or-less competition with a 'How would you spend the money?' type of question
to answer, I give a breakdown of the kind of party I'd have to the value of the prize. I only usually realise after I've submitted the entry that I
haven't included any additional alcohol in the valuation. |

I approached my broker and told him to buy, buy, buy... but he said $200 wouldn't get me any blue-chips. I said that's okay, I don't like blue chips.
I only like goldish-white ones. Haven't heard from him in a while.

That is OUTRAGEOUS, Pirate. Some curmudgeonly so-and-so's just live to make assumptions about other people. All it does is speak to their own misery.
You're the winner, Pirate. And they're not.

I'm just too practical. I did win $1000 cash couple of years back and put it straight onto my mortgage. I won't do that again though. I'd like to put
money wins aside for travel next time |

I have won $1000 and $500, I tend to be much luckier with the supermarket gift cards. Thank heaven's I've not had the same hostility as Pirate, but
then I think that can depend on state. I lived in a different state to what I do now and used to cop it just walking through the shops, we're both
shift workers with at the time 6 kids in tow, being at the shops at 10am in the morning during the week had to have meant neither of us worked! Never
experienced the same thing where we live now.
As for what I spend it on, I make sure it goes on something that we've been meaning to get. For example, with the $500 we got lockable storage
cupboards for our garage.
Top of my winning bucket list was 5K last year, was going to put it towards a tour of Turkey and dawn service at Anzac cove for my husband and son.
Kind of lucky I didn't cause they'd not have been able to go anyway. |

For $50 or $100 cards, we choose to treat ourselves to a nicer than normal date night out, boosting our usual spend. Used a $500 one towards a front
yard refresh/redesign. Mulch, plants, retaining blocks etc.
With another $3000, and 2 x $1000 wins, close together, I treated myself to Invisalign. Then subsequently won $500 and a couple of $100 cards. After
Private Health rebate, we only paid $500 ourselves. Useful, lasting investment I am extremely happy with, that lasts longer than a holiday.
I much prefer the EFT/VISA type cards over store specific ones for the flexibility they give. |

I've won quite a few cards $50 $100 $500 and a $1000. I can't even remember where they went!! I guess just on groceries and household stuff. I know I
didn't buy any luxury items. We only ever eat out if we are going with out with friends. We prefer to dine at home. We don't drink and no-one much in
our family drinks so we are cheap to keep!
Having said that I'd love a big cash win to help pay for the sandstone we are going to need to replace on our heritage apartment block! WE only have
to have 1/6 but it will be a huge bill!
EDIT: sandstone restoration might be a career option of someone's child. It costs a fortune to get it done.
Prize wins 2014: $37680
Prize wins 2011: $13000
previous years about $25000

I have tried to use any cash wins wisely. I budget our money to the cent, so, I'm not one to use any wins for luxury or on myself. It's a bad habit.
I won $1000 cash early last year so it went directly to paying our car rego for a year. Best timing ever!
I also won $10k last last year and a large portion went towards paying off our car loan and we put $2k towards our USA trip. It really put us in a
great position and we are saving for our first ever house. We have saved 25% of what we need so far. If I won another $10k, it would put our savings a
year ahead.
We are so grateful for every win. |

Over the years I've been lucky enough to win cash here and there. My first $5000.00 cash prize paid off credit cards. Now I mostly like to use any
cash for holidays or I use the store cards for purchase comps. I give my kids a lot of my cards and vouchers too.
My $10,000.00 win on Millionaire Hot Seat covered spending money on my trip to New York and Las Vegas. Part of a recent $500.00 gift card was used to
pay a speeding fine so I didn't have to use my money! |
