Best way to organise receipts

Best way to organise receipts

Up until now I've been dumping my receipts in one box. But I bought some plastic wallets today and sorted them into stores (Foodland, Woolworths, Coles) and then another folder for general product comps that are run across various stores.

But then I thought, if I did that for a year, it would be similar to dumping them in one big box, receipts would just keep piling up. So do I move the receipts to the one box after the competition has been drawn, say a month later? I'm just trying to work out how to keep it organised so if I was asked to product a receipt, then I would be able to find it more easily.

How does everyone else do it? And what do you do after a comp has finished (especially seeing there could be redraws months after the comp has ended).

Watch it as plastic can make the receipts fade away........... :o

I put mine in unwated freebie paper envelopes, with flap folded under, Coles for one, Safeways for another, etc. & then fold in 1/2 if long ones I write receipt numbers up the top also (in case of any fade) & keep in date order. If I get too many I put in store order into a larger envelope, can paper clip together in bundles if want.

However, no one has ever asked me for a receipt, so after about 12 months I usually shred them all up for the garden compost. :)

I use one of those filing folders I empty the folder into a shoebox every 6 months. On advise from others that shoebox is kept for a year. A lady last year won a car in a second chance draw, original draw was something like 6 months earlier. I don't want to be missing out on something like that. (if i remember rightly it was a Kluger)

like a concertina file?

I didn't realise plastic could fade them.

I have two small concertina files. They both have a divider for each month. I keep entry forms in one and receipts in the other. I throw out the receipts a year later, so now I would be throwing out receipts from June last year.

I have a comping folder and for my receipts I have 12 plastic sheet protectors, one for each month. I don't bother separating by store, just by month. I keep them for 12 months. In about a week we'll enter June so I'll empty the June '08 receipts and start filling it with June '09 receipts. Haven't had any probs with receipts fading.

Edit: LOL! Snap Zen!

I use envelopes for receipts and barcodes - on the front of the envelope I write the receipt date and the comp/s entered. Can then also write any other info on there - my favourite is "instant winner"!!! Once the envelope is full I put them in a plastic sleeve for that month. Plastic sleeve also holds whatever else comes up for that month (ie packaging that has to be kept).

Yeah i put mine in envelopes,
Mark woolworths, coles etc - which comp entered,
Put a copy of entry form in it
Mark in pen on the store receipt which item i bought for each comp.
Then put all envelopes in a shoe box

I am trying to work this out too. I used plastic slips in a folder and it was so neat but by March all the ones in January slip were completely blank, glad I didn't win and then get turned down.

First thing I do when I get home from shopping is make a copy of all receipts & use the copies for any info needed to enter comps , keeps my receipts nice & fresh , they go into envelopes marked by store & month then into a tissue box usually with an EF for each comp , sure makes looking up receipts easier when your going by the comp .
When I moved just before xmas I had several green bags of tissue boxes with receipts going back to 2004 , still have copies of most & that will be my next big job , recycling all those pages of photocopy paper .
With instant wins I print out the page with copy of receipt & EF all stapled together .
Have been a bit slack the past few months but they are all there together , just not as organized.
Also keep the labels or packaging & use a permanent marker to write date , store of purchase & a tick for entered .
Think I still have an EF for every store comp I have entered , gives you an idea of when & what to expect as most do same comps each year , though a few major 1's have been missing this year .
What has happened to the Best & Less comps , Holeproof Explorer not happened coming into 3rd year & the soup comps are usually underway by now , no Glad cling wrap or Alfoil , I'm almost out of so many things .

Buy a big A4 diary and staple the receipts onto the date you bought them. Been doing this for 3 years now (thanks to the suggestion of another lottos member) and I have never lost a receipt and I can find them so easily if needed because then you just look up the dates that the comp was running from and your receipt will be in that time frame.

I used to have concertina files and boxes and clip lock bags........this way I save space and time. And it is easy to store old diaries........I haven't thrown them out yet.............just in case:P:P:P

Yeah, it is great. The trick is to put them straight into the diary as soon as you get home (or close enough). that way I don't lose any sitting on my desk, or bench or in my wallet. Best system ever and yes, like inkababy, I even put in some non comping receipts so that I know where they are.

'The big A4 diary system is the one I"ve been using for over 10 years. Just stick the old diary in the bookshelve and leave it there till I think it's time to throw it out. I also stick a copy of the entry form on the date it's going to be in the PNs and write on it what date the receipt is on, so easy to find that way.

diary sounds interesting, might check out diaries tomorrow. does it end up getting so fat though that you can't close it? guess it would depend on how many product comps you enter

Caladonian - I think you were the one I originally got the idea from.....thanks heaps.

Yeah, diary can get fat...........but still better than a box or a file of lots of plastic bags in a draw.

I don't personally keep receipts for comps but I have one of these that I use for work receipts etc... If you don't mind paying $30 or so it would be great for keeping your comp receipts

Mine are not in order however I have flit top plastic bins from a cheap shop (about $4each) and I chuch them in them, I dont often have to find a receipt so dont mind looking for one if it means a wins been had.

Diary can get very fat, but a strong elastic band keeps it in shape.
posted 26-5-2009 @ 07:41 PM www

what do you stick the receipts in the diary with - tape or staples?

posted 26-5-2009 @ 07:44 PM www

I do the diary thing now after reading about it on here. Prior to that they were just all thrown in boxes and then moved to storage bins..

The diary is brilliant you just staple them and any copies and efs in the day. Plus I write next to it what comps are on the receipt. Makes it much easier to locate.

oh starlou I love the look of the Kikki K one!

the A4 diary is also a brilliant idea, thanks!

If you buy 2 A4 diaries as I do or 4 a4 diaries per year. The first quarter or half of the year you have to pay full price. Wait until they are trying to get rid of these diaries from the News Agents or post office and you will get a real bargain.:):)

Pending on how many product comps you enter, you may need only 1 x A4, yearly, 2 x A4 half yearly or 4 x A4 Quarterly for the entire year:) :)

There is no way known I can keep just one A4 diary for the year and find by June it is too bulky, but at least my reciepts, ef's to check comps are there, hence is why I have two for the year.:):)

Have since changed to quarterly:):):)

I started using the A4 diary - brilliant idea tho I should've got 2. It is bulky now so you really do need 2. Great idea:) :)
