Ideas for a christening present.........

My close friend is having her 4 month old son christened tomorrow and I am the God-mother. I have never been to a christening before and have absolutely no idea what to give for a gift. I know its last minute, but I will be heading out to get something shortly and would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Godmother usually gives a Bible, or at least something that will last like a silver eggcup or napkin ring (do people still use napkin rings?)
I usually give a Bunnykins clock for a christening gift if I can find one not at full price.

I have 5 god-children. I have always bought St Christopher medals on gold chains in kiddy sizes. They are unisex & last years...

St Christopher is the patron saint of travel ;)

Hi Erin,
My son was given a bible from my brother who was his godfather and a pin to wear on his outfit by his godmother, sorry can't remember exactly what it was, was also given a St Christopher medal from his grandmother, but I guess it depends how religious they are. If you want something a bit different, how about a handmade wooden train toy or something along those lines, my son loves the wooden toys he has been given as gifts, they last longer than plastic toys and they are also a nice heirloom he could pack away for when he has children.

Im not in the slightest religious. We got our godson a silver engraved tube to put the christening certificate in. You can get them at jewellers and those key cutting/shoe fixing places.

as another alternative, what about those sets of baby coins from the mint - you can get the year.

I always give boys a compass like that the scouts have, silver and in a little leather pouch. I get his name engraved and a message that I hope like the compass I can help to lead him well in life. JD

christening coin set

you can get them, go to the web and search for the Australian Royal mint.

there are some great collectables available at the moment and an ideal way to get someone kicked off on something to collect for good profits in 60 years time. e.i Gold soverins or brand new bank notes to keep.

also, see Australian postal stamps and coin/stamp first covers etc, or, a stamp collectors kit. on line shop and you can ask to go on a postal list for there regular book.

My dad used to buy me the mint coin set every year. Also, blocks of 4 stamp releases when they come out each month. after 40 years, I have quite a collection to which I have added really old ones too.

going down this avenue, you will never be short of something to buy the family.
e.g. a few years ago, the australia post has a sheetlet of John Farnham , framed it and gave my niece. She was wrapped as it was something different.
There are sheetlets still available of the storms winning the championship this year which you can frame?;);)

just to give you some idea of how much some go up in price. I got limited edition of popes visit to Sydney's world youth concert. It was a first day cover, with a gold stamp. $139. within a month. I saw 4 being sold on e-bay for $800 up to $1200! imagine how much I will get in 20 years?

Go for, "Limited editions" Best value.
