Las Vegas - New Years eve & any tips welcome.
We have decided to go to Vegas for Christmas & New Year.
Our eldest daughter turns 18 on New Years Day & this is a suprize Holiday. Husband Is going to take both daughters (17years & 15 Years) to
the pictures & I will pack the car, then when they come home we are saying that we are going Christmas shopping as a family - drive to the airport
& Go!
Has anyone been there at that time of the year, and has any tips please.
I have noticed most places require you to be 21 but we want to do something special New Years Eve.......
Any advice or cost savings would be greatly appreciated.

Go to www.tripadviser.com and do a search for the las vegas forum. I found it very helpful when arranging our trip there. Also, if you book a room
direct with a casino and the price goes down, you can ring them and they will lower the price, but you must book direct with them not a third party.

OMG what a wonderful suprise, that is amazing. Have a wonderful time.
There are so many shows over there, definately try the tripadviser as mentioned above.
Just check them carefully as I know when I was there we went to see a life show called Splash which was supposedly family orientated, ended up all the
girls by the halfway mark were doing the show topless. Certainly not what I expected. However your hubby would probably like it lol |

Peswald- Oh what an awesome surprise that'll be! I wasn't there for NYE but some things I found great in Vegas are the Cirque Du Soleil shows and the
Blue Man Group. Otherwise they have some pretty cool illusionists and magicians and stuff. There are heaps to choose from so go online and have a
browse.
No matter what you choose to do I am sure you'll have a fantastic time. Enjoy your trip. |

Peswald, I don't want to rain on your parade but I was talking to my Osteo yesterday and he and his family went to Las Vegas for Christmas/New Year
last year...and HATED it!
Basically, he said the Casinos have lock downs on NYE from 8pm and if you leave you cannot get into any other casino (except the one you are staying
at).
The police cordon off the middle section of the strip...with their vehicles and fencing...so, which ever side of the road you're on...that's where you
stay. (and there are many, many people) 
The midnight fireworks year before last were on roof tops of the casinos...but one caught alight...so last year (and from now on apparently)...the
fireworks are far enough away...that because of the height of the casinos you can't really see much from the street. 
I guess as long as you have some idea of what you're facing, you can prepare and make the appropriate choices to ensure you have a great holiday and
night...
ps. my suggestion would be to send the Las Vegas police an email asking for tips on your visit at that time of the year as you've been told there will
be many restrictions!  |

Haven't been to Vegas ( yet! ) but I just wanted to say what an absolutely amazing suprise!!!!! That is just awesome, have a great time!!! |

We got married again when we were there, it was fun but a bit expensive, depends what you go for. We found Vegas to be great and for us was a great
treat after 8 full on days in New York. Go and enjoy just do some research first on trip adviser, they have people who are 'experts' and can answer
any question. |

We got back from our trip we won a few months ago, I love it there wouldnt take my kids but they are a bit small and lots of young people walking or
wobbling every where..LOL , Your kids being older would love thou Im sure , just seeing the strip at night, Its fantastic and go to the Fremont
experience and see the roof show its great!
Pick up coupon books from the airport when you get there, And you can go to ticket places I think they were called 1/2 price tix and you can get
cheaper shows for that night. I missed out on Terry fator (the winner of americas got talent??) but got his dvd and hes great my kids love watching
the dvd, There are free shows every night at the mirage..Watching a volcano erupt..Really good, Musical fountain at the bellagio, and The sirens
show..Pirate one at TI treasure Island..all within walking distance and different times so you can go from one to another. Theres also a free little
zoo if you can call it that at the Flamingo where you get to see them Flamingos, So pretty!! And Siegfried and roys Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat
in the Mirage (have to pay to get into that one)....Make sure you take the girls up the top of the eiffel tower, Amazing views ...What a lovely
surprise my big ones is 18 on Xmas eve..... Hope you all have a great time!! xxxxxx |

Just remember that it is likely to be FREEEZING in vegas at christmas/new year. You wouldn't think it, but they have had snow on new years day about
2 out of the last 6.
(sorry if this is previously mentioned, at work, so haven't had time to read all attached posts yet.)
I love vegas! there is so much to do without gambling or even the stage shows... just exploring each casino with their different themes & free
shows etc are interesting... like doing a bit of a world tour in one city!
Valley of Fire about an hour outside of Vegas is spectacular! Park admission is only about $6 or so. |

A surprise trip overseas sounds a very special treat.
However, I could not think of a worse place to be on busy holidays or New Year's Eve. 
Vegas is a magnet for the American version of bogan and they descend in massive hordes particularly on weekends when I was unfortunate to visit.
Every type of bad behaviour was on show everywhere I went and it did not feel safe.
I got to my hotel at around 11pm on a Friday night to start my holiday and I was amazed to see how many other people were lined up to check in. I
lost count at 100.
The water fountain at Bellagio Hotel was amazing and the helicopter flight at night showed the lights at their best to name a couple of things I did
like.
If your budget will allow it I would skip Vegas and go on further to New York instead. Now theres a place to get excited about. Don't get me started
on that place or there will be no stopping me. For such a special surprise for your family I would make it a special place as well. You wouldn't
want any disappointments but then again we all have different tastes.

I love VEGAS
we drove from LA we hired a car (make sure it has GPS though) but its highway all the way nothing for like 4 hours .
But then you can do LA highlights etc as well ...
Enjoy your trip
we found the monorail was so so much quicker and easier then the Deuce (the bus on the strip) for the bus does the whole loop the monorail just shoots
up and down etc..
Enjoy it love it and come back bragging bout it.
P.S ill be your personal tour guide LOL |

i agree lucky bennetts, the monorail is quite convenient. we stayed at the sahara (the first stopon the monorail line) & it was only around
$30odd a night! |

What a lovely surprise for your daughter.

We'll be in Vegas next week, but decided to be somewhere a bit quieter for New Years as our kids are only 8 & 11 and we thought they may get
freaked out by lots of people on NYE.
Hope you have a great time though. Expedia had some super cheap deals with flights and accommodation from LA. |

You will have a great time. We were there in July this year and stayed at Planet Hollywood. Great accommodation and shopping. If you have time it
is well worth hiring a car for the day and going to the Grand Canyon. We did the skywalk and the view is incredible. This was all done in a day
trip. The magic shows are great and apparently they have great factory outlets for shopping but we did not have time. Have a great time. I don't
know how you can keep it a secret. What an amazing surprise for all your family. |

Each of the major hotels have a different theme and attractions etc to match the theme.
Here are some of my favourites
Bellagio - DEFINITELY go to Jean (Something) Patisserie! They have the most decadent desserts... but the main attraction... a TWO STORY chocolate
fountain. Walk through the reception area, check out the garden behind the checkin desk, walk through the garden a little further in, go towards the
left into the shopping area & you will find it there.
Also the fountains show out the front.
MGM Grand - the lion habitat. Also the CBS store where you can go be part of a test audience - you can see something before its released to the
public. They also give you some vouchers for your time.
Planet Hollywood - the indoor 'thunderstorm' in the magic mile of shops.
The luxor - I just love egyptian artefacts!
Caesar's palace - the shopping centre, statue of david.
The Rio - they have a show above the casino floor, a mardi gras type show where paddle wheeler type boats travel around suspended from the ceiling
& they throw out beads like in New Orleans.
The Venetian - the canals & gondeliers, st marks square
Paris, the eiffel tower, wandering through the decor is much like you would expect Paris to look.
New York is similar in that its kinda like wandering through new york.
