Mystery Shopping with Hoed Mystery Shopping

posted 27-10-2009 @ 02:34 PM www

I've been mystery shopping for the past couple of years for this company (and a few others). There are pros and cons. I think the important thing is to consider it as a hobby and not a reliable source of income. After I retired I went from a busy career to... nothing! My brain was starting to atrophy and I like mystery shopping because it forces me to get out and exercise my brain cells both by using my powers of observation and then by filling out reports. If you don't like form filling and writing reports, it's definitely not for you.

That said, there are some mystery shopping companies that don't treat their "shoppers" very well - they seem to treat you like a replaceable commodity, don't give much feedback and for the pay, it's not worth it.

Most work on the principle of "rotation" so you can't do the same site twice in a row, or sometimes for several months in a row, which is why I've signed up with several and after nearly two years get a fair amount of steady work. I try to line up 3 assignments or so on the same day in the same shopping area so I'm not spending a fortune on petrol as none of them reimburse for travel anymore (including Hoed).

All in all though, winning a competition is much more fun and if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick comping.

Also, beware of scam emails that are currently circulating (I've got a couple). They use actually real company names like Gapbuster and dummy up an email claiming that you can earn $200 an assignment - just send them your details. I assume it's a form of identity theft. Real mystery shopping assignments pay from $10 to $30 on average.

I was doing Mystershops with another company that have now merged with Hoed , never got petrol money with the other but I only took jobs if I wanted to be in the area for comp shopping so it didn't mater to me , got an email from them today which involved a flight to Cairns & back , they paid the flights got rembursed for having to buy a meal & drink each way plus $10 , went to the site & was already taken , looked at the email & had received it 5 minutes before , but they were looking for more workers , I did a post in Off Topic Discussions with a link to apply , hadn't seen this till now
