The History of

I am just curious when this site started and what made you think of it Andrew... Also did you know any of the mods beforehand?

It is such a good team that work together very well - and considering everybody is all over Australia it is quite a feat!

When is LOTTOS birthday so we can all celebrate together.:)

Great question tyecart. I've often been tempted to ask too but thought the invisible man might not want to reveal the mystery.

My guess - it all started as a Uni assignment on design and maintainance of a website with forum and has now grown into a PhD based on a sociological investigation of compology.

Thank goodness someone has finally asked this. I have also wondered about this but have been too apprehensive to ask. Is there some way (if the history is revealed) there can be a link to it? Like make it a permanent part of the site maybe? I think it would be very interesting to know how everything was started, why and when etc.

I have to add a big thankyou to Andrew for starting the site in the first place. My favourite place on the web.:D:D

Yeah, please post a reply Andrew.

I was the first to post in a few of the categories of the 'new' forum, just to 'be the first'. But the old forum was something I only knew for a few months. Waiting for the story now.

I think you're right I can remember everyone trying to predict when it would be. LOl Isn't it great how lottos is growing so fast but staying so friendly. Love the site can't wait to read the answer to Tye's question.:)

ok, a brief summary, and I apologise to the original poster who requested this some months ago too; I think it was jct or jaclit, for not replying sooner.

I started with a fascination and enjoyment for competitions when I was about 7 however most of those comps were colouring in competitions which I never seemed to win.

As with most, I've had periods where I've not entered, periods where I've entered solidly and not won, and periods where I've entered infrequently and won.

Such are the joys and tribulations of comping.

As for how and when the site started...
Going back a few years I got on the net for the first time and found it absolutely fascinating. Having said that, I was using it mostly at that time for email and I found it frustrating that when I emailed someone that most of them didn't reply within minutes. After all, the technology meant they had the email within a few seconds!
I guess some companies are still like that but email to me still implies that it should be a fast turnaround.

Anyway, I purchased a few domain names over a period of time, some .com, some .fm (now that was speculative and a waste of of $$$) and also If any of you have purchased an Australian domain you would know it's more complex than a straight .com.

At first was a site listing primarily free lotteries - this was at the time of the net boom when net advertising appeared to pay well - that's if you could get a reputable relationship that is.

The site at first was done completely in Flash which while looked impressive, took too long to load and search engines couldn't easily, if at all, index the content which meant less vistors.

Competitions and freebies were added soon thereafter the html version of lottos was born, including the facility to list by close date, closing soon and last chance.
Those sections are still online at

In May 2002 the first incarnation of the lottos forum was made, and surprisingly, on the first day of it being made live, I had my first member join who also sent me a message kindly asking if I required some assistance with the forum.
This member has been here through thick and thin ever since and I thank her from the bottom of my heart! (Beeline)
Since then a number of members have approached me to ask if they could be moderators and you know who they are and how they keep the forum (and me sometimes) in check!
Thanks y'all!

In June 2003 the forum was upgraded and a number of new features were added, the one with most impact being able to sort competitions by close date and various other reports, now 81 reports are available.

To answer some of your direct questions:
No, none of the moderators were known to me beforehand and to my knowledge none knew each other prior to being mods, however some have since become friends just as some members have met and become friends virtually and in real life.

The lottos forum birthday would be this month, in fact it was a few days ago, on the 15th - two years old.
The site itself I think started in 1997.
Who posted the very first comp? That would have been me - no point having a site with no content! lol!
How many hits does the site get on average a day? That's one that is hard to define as hits are no gauge on actual vistors... hits are anything accessed on the site - images, files etc.

The site started because I have an interest in competitions and am fascinated by the net.

The forum started as I had seen some American sweepstakes sites have them and they were appealing: interactive, fun, community, great for whatver subject matter you were dealing with, in lottos case competitions and freebies - and as you can see members love it too!

Well done Andrew and Mods, that's all I can say. We all appreciate your efforts in keeping lottos up and running. I honestly don't know what I would do without lottos, as an "at home" Mum with 2 little kids, it's absolutely a must-have for me, it keeps me sane and offers me a great hobby. I hope all the lottos members are able to enjoy the fruits of your labours for a long time to come. Thank you so much guys!

wow thanks Andrew

Must admit even as a mod I've wondered how the site started up.

Knew Bee was the original mod and you are very lucky to have her but you know that already.

I joined in Oct 2002 so didn;t come in too late after the start of the reincarnation of Lottos. My how its grown since then.

Thanks so much for a look back at Lottos history.

Thats amazing Andrew well done, you certainly started something that has been worthwhile to so many people sharing comps, storting out problems having a winge or sharing a sorrow or happiness and the great mods were would we be without them, also White Pointer who always does a great job in the winners circle with her daily pics.

Thanks Andrew for sharing that with us.It gives a little insight into you the man rather than this mysterious being:)
I have never really had a hobby, other than raising my kids and working hard over the years at this job and that.I never really took time out for myself.Lottos has changed all that.
This ismy hobby and while my family always come first,I always make time for myself nowdays and enjoy my time comping.
A huge thankyou to everyone involved here for all your hard work.

I luv Lottos:D:D:D

I've been nagging Andrew for months to tell us his story.

Andrew - I was wondering also whether you have a long term "vision" for lottos - what are your aspirations for the site?

I'm being hounded to go out to dinner - so must get going!!!!

*sob* oh it's so lovely to be part of something so special! Thanks to one and all for making Lottos what it is. Because we missed this year's birthday we will have to plan a nice bash for next year!

I mustn't get distracted. Hmm, distracted, that's a funny word. I wonder if someone can get tracted?
