Greenseas Tuna no longer in Coles supermarkets

Just received the email below... other members would have too:

Coles has taken the decision to cease ranging Greenseas Tuna and Greenseas Salmon.

We would encourage all lovers of Greenseas Tuna and Greenseas Salmon to buy these products at Woolworths supermarkets or your local IGA, Foodworks, Costco or Spar supermarket around Australia. We'll have the same great Greenseas promotions and products available in these supermarkets. If your store doesn't have Greenseas, ask the Store Manager to stock it for you, or you can contact Coles directly using this online form.

Interesting...Wonder if it didn't sell well enough or whether Coles is making room for their own products? Never liked the Greenseas tuna, it has a really fishy taste I find.

Aww.. what a shame. This is my favourite tuna. If its not on special at Woolies I always look for a special at Coles.
Thanks for letting us know.

LOL what do you expect Tuna to taste like other than fish :spin::spin: Id be concerned if it tasted like anything else, sorry your reply cracked me up reminded of me Jessica Simpson Chicken from the sea comment :spin::spin:

Greenseas tuna is from Thailand but most of the other companies also have fish coming from there.

These days you really have to read the fine print on the cans because most of the stuff is coming from Asia!

well pooh-bah

Coles is the only shop I can find here that has the Greenseas tomato and caramelised onion which I really like

and that chop chop chicken DOES seem fishy to me ;)

Greenseas tuna has 'egg-white' listed on its ingredients...tuna should be tuna, not have egg-white in it. Yuk! Thank goodness it's gone, although when I did accidentally buy some, my cat loved it!

I know it sounds funny re fishy taste, but if you take Sirena tuna for example, it has a nice flavour whereas Greenseas to me tastes a bit 'off' if that makes sense.

I get what your saying damita30 it just made me laugh :thumbup: I love Sirena tuna too

Not surprised your cat loves it because it looks more like cat food to me than a nice tuna. Sirena or Safcol for me. I don't even buy Greenseas for competitions.

I was hoping that I would do some research and find that Coles were not selling Greensea for moral reasons and that they were 'unfriendly' tuna suppliers - pfftt - turns out Greensea Tuna are THE most sustainable tuna operators out there and the others mentioned above are not so much!! :thumbdown:

http://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2010/04/16/greenpeace-supermar...

Now that IS food for thought :)

Maybe Coles want to concentrate on making their Coles brand of Tuna number 1... as they are currently ranked number 2???

EDIT -

Canned tuna rankings: 1 (most sustainable) - 10 (least sustainable)

1. Greenseas
Greenseas uses sustainable Skipjack Tuna and is improving its labelling. As leaders on sustainability we hope it will provide consumers with a sustainable pole and line caught tuna range to avoid unnecessary bycatch.

2. Coles
Coles use Skipjack Tuna and are good on traceability and labelling. The next step Coles can take is to introduce a sustainable seafood policy that rules out the use of FADs to catch tuna.

3. Aldi
Aldi has shown leadership by introducing a troll caught tuna and providing consumer information. However, it must end its trade in overfished Yellowfin and Albacore Tuna to move up the ranking.

4. Woolworths
Woolworths sells overfished Yellowfin Tuna and has inconsistent labelling. Woolworths’ credibility on sustainability and equitability depends on working with suppliers to improve its tuna ranking.

5. Safcol
It is an embarrassing report card for Safcol. Safcol does not label its cans or provide useful information on the true chain of custody of its products.

6. Paramount
Paramount has a long way to go. It must provideinformation on its chain of custody and remove overfished Yellowfin Tuna from its product range.

7. John West
John West does not let consumers know what is in the can. If it is truly committed to sustainability, it will provide a bycatch free product by looking to selective fishing methods like pole and line for its range.

8. Sole Mare
Sole Mare trade in the overfished species Yellowfin Tuna. It needs to end its trade in this species and provide consumers with truly sustainable tuna.

9. IGA, Franklins and SPAR
It is shameful that these three supermarkets cannot provide the most basic consumer information about the tuna in their products. They need to clean up their act and be honest about their tuna trade.

10. Sirena
Sirena is an irresponsible company that does not even let consumers know which tuna is in its cans. Sirena must be transparent and frank about its tuna and the fishing methods it uses.

Criteria for the canned tuna ranking:
• If the tuna comes from overfished stocks;
• If the tuna comes from illegal vessels or companies;
• If the tuna can is labelled correctly; and
• If the tuna was fished using methods that result in high levels of bycatch.

Brands were also ranked on their:
• Commitment to not source tuna from proposed marine reserves.
• Commitment to equitable sourcing policy for tuna.

The rankings are based on an international canned tuna ranking system. Australian tuna brands have some of the worst practices worldwide, with no brand ranking above 30%.

It'll be to do with their own brand. I liked Greenseas AND it's dolphin friendly. I want to see a statement from Coles to tell me that THEIR tuna is ocean creature friendly.

From kakadu's link...thank you

http://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2010/04/16/greenpeace-supermar...

10. Sirena
Sirena is an irresponsible company that does not even let consumers know which tuna is in its cans. Sirena must be transparent and frank about its tuna and the fishing methods it uses.
Criteria for the canned tuna ranking:
• If the tuna comes from overfished stocks;
• If the tuna comes from illegal vessels or companies;
• If the tuna can is labelled correctly; and
• If the tuna was fished using methods that result in high levels of bycatch.

SO if I had to use Sirena I wouldn't buy it if it was the last tuna on earth!

I've emailed Coles as follows:-

Firstly, re Greenseas Tuna...according to this site Greenseas has the MOST sustainable & responsible tuna fishing practices, yet you have decided not to stock Greenseas any more. Whereas Sirena, that you still stock, are an horrendous company re their transparency as to their fishing practices etc.
Secondly, I would also like to know about this part of YOUR environmental responsibility & what you intend to do in the future re your brand of tuna:-

Information taken from here:-

http://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2010/04/16/greenpeace-supermar...

2. Coles
Coles use Skipjack Tuna and are good on traceability and labelling. The next step Coles can take is to introduce a sustainable seafood policy that rules out the use of FADs to catch tuna.

I JUST WILL NOT BE BUYING YOUR RANGE until you implement this "sustainable seafood policy" & tell us you have.

10. Sirena
Sirena is an irresponsible company that does not even let consumers know which tuna is in its cans. Sirena must be transparent and frank about its tuna and the fishing methods it uses.
Criteria for the canned tuna ranking:
• If the tuna comes from overfished stocks;
• If the tuna comes from illegal vessels or companies;
• If the tuna can is labelled correctly; and
• If the tuna was fished using methods that result in high levels of bycatch.

So I will be buying my GREENSEAS tuna from Woolworths.

Thanks for your time.

p.s. I might add that whilst buying Greenseas from Woolworths it is interesting to note that THEIR own brand (i.e. Woolworths) is dreadful re their sustainable fishing policies etc. They also need to be brought to task as they're much worse than the Coles own brand. Greenseas must have been giving Coles a run for their money re sales so Coles just got rid of them. Not good.

Agghhhhhh.

good points that is food for thought, I just checked my pantry and its full of greenseas and coles brand tuna so I'll probably stick with coles, or get greenseas from woolies. I eat tuna almost daily for lunch. I remember asking about that chicken in the can and found out that was made from reclaimed meat from caged hens so have never bourght that . I usually do try and research my food and wont be buying sirena again now

Well now we know why Sirena doesnt have that tuna fishy taste - is might not even be tuna!!! LOL :P:(:mad::no:

May be just clearing out their stock. Anyway I emailed them so I guess they'll verify.

Yes I only find Italian tuna nice, sirena, the aldi italian tuna, or sole marie.

Quinoa - there was an email from Greenseas in my inbox.

Just found this article online http://www.sarahwilson.com.au/2010/04/which-tinned-tuna-shou... which was intersting.

Seems the ones I like are all yellow fin tuna which is the one that shouldn't be fished. Greenseas is the one to be buying as they use sustainable tuna. Shame is tastes so bad. Once you've had the italian tunas you'd just never go back to the other sort.

Might be easier to just not eat it.

Thats strange as my coles has not stocked John West (my tuna of choice) for over a year, hope they are going to stock that now.

I agree Spongebob - if we just don't eat it they MIGHT get the message too.
However, I think we need to email these companies though e.g Sirena, tell them you love the product but you're not buying it because of their NON environmentally friendly practices. People power IS the only way other than orgs like GreenPeace etc keeping us informed.
Anyway if they just keep going like they are there's not going to be any tuna left anyway, so we wont have a choice, we wont have the lovely fish and they wont have a business.

I received an email this morning from Greenseas's, I assume that is where Andrew got his info.

I have since deleted it though.

I'm sure the reason Coles is not stocking Greenseas is to sell more Coles brand tuna.

Have you ever tried to find Finish (for comps) or Morning Fresh in the dishwasher detergent section of Coles?? Very little of these if any but a huge amount of Coles brand!!

While I can afford it I don't buy Coles or Select brands because they are doing their best to push out the small Australian labels.

We only buy our tuna from Aldi, the one in the gold and black can as it is the only one I could find that was not made in Asia. Refuse to buy it if it is from Tailand. Would rather not eat tuna. Actually thinking of making my own from fresh tuna.
