Free Native Plants Program

Brisbane City Council offers the Free Native Plants Program to residents, schools, clubs, body corporates and community groups to plant within their grounds. The program does not provide free native plants for small or large scale events, fetes, promotional programs or fundraising activities. There are a variety of free native plant types on offer through the program, including:


    * shade and feature trees
    * tufting plants and native grasses
    * groundcovers
    * climbers
    * shrubs
    * palms

Residential properties

Brisbane ratepayers, Housing Commission and Defence Housing residents are entitled to claim two free native plants, once per financial year (July to June).

If you rent or lease a property, your body corporate or the property owner must make the application.

Claim your free native plants

To claim your free native plants you will need to get your Free Native Plants voucher:


    1. Visit Council or go to a Council library or ward office and present your rates notice or for Housing Commission and * Defence Housing residents provide evidence of rental payment.
    2. You will be provided with an approved stamped Free Native Plants voucher.
    3. Visit a participating nursery and exchange your voucher for two free native plants.


If you're claiming vouchers on behalf of another ratepayer such as a relative or neighbour, you will need to obtain their written permission.

New home owners in targeted suburbs

New home owners in newly developed areas in the following Brisbane suburbs will receive a letter when they order their recycling bin, advising them they can collect four free native plants.

The letter is valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

Schools, community groups, clubs and body corporates

Free native plants are available for:

    * schools, community groups and charitable organisations - up to 50 free plants
    * body corporates via a single bulk order - two free plants per unit
    * clubs on Council leased land - up to 20 free plants
    * schools celebrating Arbor Day - the number of plants varies

Schools and community groups need to describe the extent and purpose of their planting project in the application. Applicants will be contacted once their request has been approved.
