Cairns Family Holiday

Hi everyone,

My family and I (me, hubby & 2 yr old) are heading to cairns for a weeks holiday in march and would love fellow lotto'ers suggestions on what to do and where to go whilst there?

Thanks in advance

The sky rail is great. It goes up to a little town called Kuranda. There is also a train. Some people go up by train and down by sky rail or vice versa.

The drive to Port Douglas is beautiful.

Swim in the lagoon on the esplanade.

We have a small waterpark called Sugarworld in Cairns Southern Suburbs or Muddys in town is beautiful (and free) and is absolutely fantastic for young kids.

The Wildlife Habitat at Port Douglas is also quite good for small kids. They can feed kangaroos etc. :) There is heaps to do! Am sure you will have a great holiday!

PS - Green Island is gorgeous for a day trip and of course the magnificent Great Barrier Reef.

Oh we loved it there & stayed at Trinity Beach. All of the above what MrsCressy suggested. Lagoon on Esplanade was so much fun as it was so hot.

I loved Trinity Beach (The butterfly house in Kuranda was amazing and even a hit with my fifteen year old teenager),a handmade lolly shop over there for the sweet tooth.
Going for a cruise on one of the boats to snorkel or dive is great..
(I went diving but was tragically sea sick blerghhhh.)
Sky Rail is a beautiful view.
For the adventurous ...or not... we all went Bungee jumping, all our first time at the varying ages of 11, 15, 36 and 43 it was amazing and not hard at all (gasp)
For those not so adventurous there is a swing thingy..
I agree Port Douglas is gorgeous and having a hire car made everything possible at any time.
Have Fun:):):)

You HAVE to go visit Hartleys Crocodile Farm!
It's amazing and well priced!

Agree, get a hire car. The buses stop and start at all the hotels and can take forever to get anywhere, (especially if you are travelling with a 2 y.o.). Many nice beach resorts between Cairns and Port Douglas. We have stayed in the area many times. Loved Trinity Beach when the children were younger too. Half the fun of a holiday is the anticipation and planning, :):

I am going to Cairns for a week over christmas and found that all activities can be expensive so, to save money, i bought Red Balloon vouchers from other lottos members at a good price and booked my activities through red balloon. Have a look here Red Balloon Cairns lowest price to highest

I would get a hire car too! I did the skyrail thing and the reef trip thing but the best thing we did was hire a car for the day and drive towards cape tribulation.....forest was beautiful....

I also suggest Mossman Gorge and Pimpana Park near Port Douglas.

Mossman Gorge is icy cold all year round and very beautiful. Pimpana Park was built by a fellow for his love who never came, it is heritage and eerie

Hire a little pontoon boat in Port Douglas and go fishing. Kids might even see a croc or two. My guys drove the pntoon, caught fish and saw a croc.

Go twilight sailing at the Port Douglas Yacht Club. It is free and there are some yachts that will take kids - just ask. Dinner is yummy too.

Definitely get a hire car. When we did it, we had a day of driving south, a day of driving north (port douglas), a day of driving west (ended up at a wind farm I recall) etc. We saw lots of waterfalls, a big crater filled with water from a meteor.

Did an island day tour too - not sure which island (wasn't green island though) and lunch was included when you got to the island. That was great too.

Just a beautiful place. Was our favourite place to holiday ever. I loved all the mountains around Cairns, just beautiful. Was sad when I got home and everything was flat and there was no mountains.

We spent no time whatsoever in the CBD, there was too many interesting things to visit elsewhere.

P.s it is really easy to drive around Cairns, I know some people worry but Cairns is quite small and the traffic and the roads are easy and well signed, we did take our own GPS which was lucky as even the more expensive hire car did not have one!

we are hiring a car for sure, need it with the little one. I like the idea of driving in a different direction each day.

so many ideas, damn, now i wish i had of booked longer :)
