Anyone on Telstra Prepaid who can call 1900 or SMS 19 numbers?

I have just spent an hour on the phone with them only to be told they CANNOT remove the restriction. They are getting someone to call me back tomorrow ( a team leader or something like that) who can apparently explain in more detail.

I am NOT letting them get away with this. They say it is because of 1900 numbers being for sex lines etc, which is none of their business anyway... I pay for the calls BEFORE I make them and so should be able to call ANY number I wish!

If I don't get a satisfactory result it will be Ombudsman time.

I started a hread recently asking if there were any people on prepaid that could do SMS as I had the same problem with another company.
Lots of replies and someone answered that you can do SMS on Telstra prepaid. Not sure how to get the thread up for you.
If not heaps of other good ones listed.

I do premium sms on all my Telstra phones, I have had them for ages though. BUT only with the original credit you can not use any bonus credit. Not sure about 1900 numbers as I use the home phone for those.

When dealing with Telstra I have found an email works well and ask them to get someone in Australia to phone you back because their call centre staff don`t seem to be able to understand you ;)

Same here. I have no problem withi the premium SMS but have never used the 1900 so not sure about that one. I only rarely SMS and never phone.

I have been through the same process, I was told only post paid contracts can call 1900 and 19 numbers. Only Premium service available to Prepaid services is premium SMS. Let me know if you get a different story.

I have the same problem, can't make premium calls or SMS, also can't restore my voicemail and instead only have voice2text, which is very annoying for all the promoters trying to ring me ;)

Thanks for the reply's folks. Interesting that older customers seem to be able to make the calls / SMS's. I only switched to prepaid recently after being on post paid / contract for many years.

One way or another I am going to make sure they fix it.

I can make the premium sms's, always have been able to.
I cannot call the 1900 numbers. Never have been able to.

IMO, it's their company, they're providing the service, if they don't want to let you call 1900 numbers, they don't have to.

You have freedom of choice, you can change providers.

ditto yes to premium sms, no to 1900 on telstra pre paid. I got my telstra prepaid as a 'backup' so ifmy carrier went down I may have an alternative one to use...I recharge this over long life and don't make calls etc on it just use it for comping. This way it also allows me to have an 'exclusive' phone for I WAKE UP WITH Bxxxxx Today!!!! and a separate one for Sunrise!!!;)::lol:

That's just it... I DON'T have the freedom of choice as we live in the middle of nowhere and Telstra is the ONLY provider out here.

I don't see why there is a problem with competition sms..I can use them on my Telstra pre-paid.
However I can't make 1900 phone calls.

But I don't think you will get anywhere with Telstra. You have chosen a plan that doesn't give access to 1900 numbers. That was your choice and, given that, I don't see how you can demand access to these numbers without changing to a plan (probably not pre-paid) that does.

well then I guess you have freedom of choice to go on a plan that does offer the calls.

I don't think a national corporation is going to let one person use 1900 calls on their prepaid service when no one else can.

Now I could very well be wrong as this is just an assumption but because 1900 numbers recoup some of the of the cost as payment and that no one really knows how long the call is going to be the reason they are not included on prepaid is that possibly the charge is charged at the end of the call. If say you only have $3 credit on your prepaid and you rang a 1900 number and spoke for an hour the cost would be way way over that three dollars and Telstra and the company you rang would have no way of recouping the shortfall unless you recharged but if you are on postpaid obviously they can bill you.

That is more or less the explanation they gave me some time ago when I queried them.

I am not on a plan and get a $20 Telstra recharge from Cole's each fortnight and use it for all sms text comps i cannot call 1900 numbers at all. I don't mind as long as i can text competitions. Had not really thought about it until you mentioned it. Good luck with Telstra.

Hi WRG I have had a prepaid with Telstra, Vodafpne and Optus for years and so I regularly check out their prepaid offers and I have never seen one that covered 1900 numbers. I've always assumed it was for the reasons given above, the cost of the content being unknown.

You also have to be careful as not all their prepaid offers always cover Premium SMS, so you need to check what is covered before making a decision on which prepaid offer.

WRG are you able to send Premium SMSs?

I'm unaware of any of the main pre-paid provider offering this for the reasons listed above.

if its really important to you, you may need to consider post paid or perhaps a calling card
