We stayed at the Granvia which is above the main railway station, rates ranges between reasonable and stratospheric depending on dates. It is the
perfect location.

We rented a gorgeous little traditional Japanese house in a good area much cheaper than hotel rates...and much nicer! |

Our last day in Japan today Will be back to Japan again one day for sure as so much
to see!
Wanted to thank 3littlepigs for the Nagomi Visit suggestion! Was a highlight of our trip and family offered us their guest house to stay in if we come
back again! Lovely people and food! We got on really well that they wanted us to stay for dinner. The grandmother played the shamisen for us and
dressed my eldest up in a traditional Kimono.
If you plan to just travel in the local Kansai region - Kobe, Kyoto, Arashiyama, Nara & Osaka. I recommend just getting an ICOCA card and using
hyperdia.com to plan your train journeys. If you have kids under 12 get a child ICOCA card at the JR office at the airport. As kids are 1/2 Price. We
went out every day on the trains/subway around Osaka or to other local cities and spent only around $500 for 10 days for 3 adults and 1 kid (including
1 trip back to airport). You can use ICOCA for all railway lines which gives you more options. This is compared to nearly $1200 for a JR pass for 7
days which only let's you use JR lines. I think when you go to Japan you need to plan where you are going to go and whether the passes available and
there are many types are the way to go or not. If you plan to travel all around Japan by train then the JR pass would be the best option.
I also recommend getting the OSAKA amazing pass for 2 days ( which includes all local transport and entry to many attractions for free)....but make
the most of the 2 days and maximise all the free entry stuff you can do. It helps you also get your bearings around the subway system. I think the 1
day pass is a bit expensive as it is unlikely you will cover enough attractions to make it worthwhile!
The cherry blossoms are a bit late this year (next week for Kyoto), so unfortunately we will miss them all in full bloom but we did see many trees in
bloom early so are still very happy with all the beautiful ones we saw! |

Hokkiado us great and sooo different to Honshu. Its like Japan's Tasmania. Hired a car, got to see some very remote places that are cut off by snow
most if the year. Stayed on a Dairy farm, went to local festivals in the mountains. Driving is really easy there and allows you to see more than
tourst traps. |

No, my fourth trip. I love it.
I have good friends just left today for Japan opting to hire a car to drive around Takayama district over to the west coast of Honshu as there are
heaps of little spa towns and temples to drop in on. As there are three of them and car hire is cheap, works out better than trains. They are then
able to stay at out of town Ryokan. Japanese drive on the left, and have very low speed limits on highways. Gps works by putting in the phone number,
so dont worry about street addresses, which dont work quite like ours.
My other tip is go for the "japaese style" rooms instead of western rooms when you have an option. They are usually cheaper, and your beds get put
away during the day, so you end up with more space. Let go of your inhibitions and embrace the communal baths - just dont let your 8 year old daughter
do a running bomby into the serenity! Not really blendin in!
One more tip - dont necessarily go into the restaurants at street level with "english menu" .Our best finds were on 3rd or 4th floors of very
unassuming office buildings. Also be brave - just try what they recommend - often good not to know what it is, in case you get grossed out.( I had to
draw the line at a raw chicken restaurant , although im sure it would be ridiculously sanitised) |
