Hi guys off to China in around 2 weeks. Anyone been and how to deal with internet so I can keep in touch with the kids |

Yes we've been but it was a few years ago. All social media was tricky - blogs, facebook, etc but my own email account worked fine from memory. Have a
wonderful trip. |

My son travels tere for work a lot tere is wifi in most motels but e buys a sim at the airport , he as some program on is computer to get round the
facebook bit , I think you can do instagram though. He face times us all te time mostly from his hotel but sometimes from his work. |

We accessed facebook etc using a VPN as China blocks access to most social media and monitors a lot of the free wifi access |

There was a story on a news channel recently about the censors blocking Whatsapp as well as google and Facebook and a blitz on shutting down VPN’s.
We have been a few times and have basically stuck to emailing the kids (but not gmail) and phoning them. You can use the Telstra International Day
pass facility in China for unlimited calls and text for $10 a day. We do that overseas regularly only using it occasionally and hammering the $10 when
we do.
A few of the hotels we stayed at last time had their own VPN, our kids travelling with us that time loved that!
Warn the kids that whatever communication you plan to do could change at the whim of the censors, it can change day by day!
