Filmink Win tix to Environmental Film Festival Australia, Melbourne
Entry methods: Online, Freq: Once Only, Closes 20/10/2019

2019 marks EFFA’s biggest festival to date, with a record total of 44 feature, short, experimental and, for the first time, kids’ and youth films selected across 18 countries and screening across Melbourne from 24 October – 1 November.

This year’s highlights include:

Into the Jungle – Friday November 1, 6.45pm-10.30pm @ Palace Westgarth Cinemas, Northcote

When newlywed Australian zookeepers Jim and Jean Thomas pack up their suburban Melbourne lives and travel to Papua New Guinea to save one of the world’s rarest animals, they quickly realise that improving human welfare is key to achieving animal conservation. Director Mark Hanlin showcases a triumph of will, passion and determination with this moving film. Guests of the screening are invited to join Jim and Jean Thomas for a panel Q&A, alongside film critic and writer Glenn Dunks.

Mossville: When Great Trees Fall – Saturday 26 October, 5.15-7.20pm @ Cinema Nova, Carlton

In a small Louisiana town, petrochemical industries purchase cheap surrounding real estate, contaminating the land of the once thriving, centuries-old black community. One by one, families of Mossville have abandoned their now-uninhabitable ancestral homes. Everyone except for Stacey Ryan. Surrounded by a toxic wasteland, he refuses to let the deadly link between racial and environmental injustice prevail – despite the devastating toll this has taken on his health, family and community.

Australian Premier, Best Feature Documentary – Ranier Independent Film Festival 2019 (USA), David Carr Award For Truth In Non-Fiction Filmmaking – Montclair Film Festival 2019 (USA)

Youth Unstoppable – Sunday 27 October, 1-3.30pm @ Palace Westgarth Cinemas, Northcote

At just 15 years of age, Slater Jewell-Kemker began attending environmental summits, camera in hand and ready to make a difference. She now follows the stories of youth activists from around the world in her debut documentary Youth Unstoppable. Reinforcing that it’s not too late to save our planet, EFFA invites audiences to join the Youth Forum discussion following this film, led by the Darebin Youth Jury.

City Dreamers – Friday 25 October, 6.15-8.20pm @ Cinema Nova, Carlton

Offering a lively celebration of four pioneers of female architecture, City Dreamers effectively draws parallels between urban life and the women’s movement to encourage audiences to expand their way of thinking outside restrictive and outdated definitions. Featuring intimate interviews, archival footage and elegant modernist architecture, this vibrant and intelligent film is sure to inspire. The screening will be followed by a discussion with: Miriam McGarry, Clare Cousins, Emma Appleton and Kate Dundas.

Mycelium Made, screening as part of Australasian Shorts – Thursday 31 October, 6.45-8.55pm @ Palace Westgarth Cinemas, Northcote

As the fashion industry desperately searches for new innovations and creative designers, people like Amanda Morglund is bringing sustainability to new heights – she creates clothing from mushrooms.
