Old books and that musty smell

I like to collect vintage children's books but they have a musty smell.

I've just been googling how to get of rid of it and now I'm concerned whether I should keep the books at all. Pages I've found said that it's due to mold/mildew and that can be harmful to health and also to your other books.

So, just wondering if anyone has advice? Have you had books like that and successfully got rid of the smell? Have you tried the cat littler/baking soda trick? Or is it just safer to ditch them all?

My husband says I'm being silly and old books smell.

Thanks.
