Norfolk Island travel advice
I'd love some advice on travelling to Norfolk Island from those who have been - best time to go, things to do, where to stay (we'll probably go for an
apartment), how long to stay, should we hire a car, nice restaurants. Thanks for reading.  |

We went in March and loved it, so relaxing and so much nature.
Cars are usually included in your accomodation, apart from bicycles they are the only way to get around
We ate at the bowling club, very good meals and got a Chinese takeaway, nice food, only open 3 or 4 nights for a few hours
There is often a shortage of supplies as boats can't always land
We went on a glass bottom boat cruise in a lagoon, very beauitful
We saw the play that has been on for over 20 years, it was very informative and like a pantomine, we enjoyed it

I loved our week long stay on Norfolk, could have stayed much longer!
Hubby didn’t feel the same though….he finds it hard to relax and needed a bit more going on.
Stayed at Cumberland units which is a short walk to restaurants etc.
Loved the meals at the bowls club too and was full of locals who know how to party.
We went at the start of May. Looking back on my photos it was warm enough to be wearing tshirts and shorts but not to swim.
Supplies can be a problem. When we were there the boats couldn’t unload due to rough seas so the wasn’t a lot of fresh fruit and veg about.
Everyone I met was very friendly and accomodating. Not a five star kind of place and some of the other hotels looked pretty shabby so be careful, you
get what you pay for. |

We stayed at Governor's Lodge - we had a package deal with some short tours, which gave an overview of the island's history.

My husband and I liked it, there were little self contained cabins set amongst gardens, nothing flash but it was nice and relaxing, it was handy
having the reception desk a cafe, fancy restuarant, a small pool but we didn't use it, too busy driving around, exploring
Everything is so close, it is great for driving around, exploring
There is not much night life and driving at night can be dangerous, there are no lights, except in town and cows wander on the road. The black ones
aren't visible at all!

The climate is very moderate all year...not too hot and not too cold. That said, we've been there for a very hot week where they had atypical low
cloud cover causing heat and humidity.
There is about a fortnight's worth of different touristy things to do...fish fry on the headland, breakfast walks, farm visits, local culture meals
and classes, historical plays and reenactments, markets. You need to sort out what you want to do when you arrive and book anything straight away.
There's also lots of history from the penal colony to explore on foot, lovely botanic gardens, and my favourite beach Emily's Bay for sheltered
swimming.
Most accommodation packages include a car, a meal at Hilli's (nice), and a half day introductory bus tour, worth doing on your first day to
familiarise yourself with the island. The accommodation is the cheap and cheerful variety, mostly. Our favourite is Panorama, for the fabulous views,
but it's a little way out of "town"
I'd highly recommend the tour of Colleen McCullough's house, the Pitcairn village, and Norfolk Blue and Dino's restaurants. |
