Is comping changing for the better or worse?

Is comping changing for the better or worse?

Having comped for decades, I've noticed comping is certainly changing a lot these days. And not necessarily for the better. From an influx of instant wins where less than 10% are given out, to trips with no airfares or frills.

It seems like promoters have worked out how they can promote a client with 'so-called' big prize competitions without actually giving away all those big prizes.

It looks great when a promotion says something like 'Win a share of $1m'. But we seasoned compers know that it's a 'winning moment' comp and no more than about $100k will actually be won.

And now we're getting more and more holidays with no airfares. Not too bad if you were planning on travelling to the area anyway, but beware of the extra costs.
Often these 'no airfares' comps are for cruises or tours. Not only are you up for the airfares but also accommodation before and after, plus the expenses that go with that. To be safe, you have to arrive a couple of days before your cruise/tour to allow for delays or cancellations and at least one night at the end as well.

Worse for sure IMHO

SO many 'winning moment' rorts for a start

And then obnoxious responses (or no response at all) if you contact the promoter about it

And these are multi multi million dollar companies , not small businesses happily misleading customers

Easy - worse. Apart from the above, so much is on social media and from a comping perspective it's incredibly boring entering (tag, tag, tag). Plus that's made it more mainstream, so lots of non-compers entering making it more competitive. And then there were all the social media bans happening, so some people couldn't even enter - making it unfair. You don't get that with other entry methods. Love to turn back time and have comping back the way it was when I started.

Comping is worse these days, especially because of the Instagram and Facebook competitions.

Much, much worse

Good post Smiley

Inevitably, a lot worse.

Worse in that it requires just luck to win in so many comps.

Prize wins 2014: $37680
Prize wins 2011: $13000
previous years about $25000

The harder you work the luckier you get

AGREE! Thinking of not renewing my subscription this year.

Agree with above. I have never been very lucky in winning, but entering is so much harder or as others said boring ‘tagging’ for many comps. Add to that what smiley said and sands about winning moments and it’s very much worse. Plus so many want a minimum spend of $20-30 or multiple items purchased. I keep trying though in the hope one day I’ll be lucky! :D

2005 total:$1,130-
2006 $5,500 app.
2007 $2,000 approx.
2008 $1200
2009 $930
2010 $4,200
2011 $1,473
2012 $675 :(
2013 $462 :(
2014 $2,150
2015 $120 :(
2016 $1150
2017 $210
2018 $210 at least I'm consistent!
2019 $115 still waiting for the big one!
2020 $550
2021 $3,000
All I want ... is a chance to prove that money can't make me happy! And 2024 is the year to do it!

My comping has until recently been exciting and engaging and with great results, it has now become depressing, reading all the T&Cs to eliminate all the digital prize ones and the instant minute ones.

worse for sure i enter a few not like i did in the good old days.

Sadly it's becoming worse as I agree what all have said the instant wins down to the correct seconds make it hard , n Digital cards I not fussed on prize pools aren't as generous even 2 Nd chance draws aren't there as much , preferred all the old ways but maybe I old school lol.

Without question ... for the worse.

Worse. Wouldn’t it be fun to see an old school comp where you send in your barcode and receipt! I don’t think the marketing people of companies today were around when they were on, or could be bothered with the physical entries over electronic ones these days. (Unless a creative entry within the t&c’s)
Agree unachievable winning moments, social media tagging/sharing, minimum spends and pesky electronic gift cards seem to be the new norm.

Yes ... those electronic gift cards are the bane of my life. I can never get them to work and they clog up my "wallet" so I keep losing track of what I've used and what I've not. I'd rather at least be able to print them out like the Woolworths ones. They at least work.

I agree merivale, the cards on my phone, half don't work, I thought it was just me;)

I once entered a supermarket purchase plus WOL comp at five supermarkets and won them all. 5 TV's and 5 video players! Thoses were the days. Actually it was a bit over the top. Had fun giving them away though.

Wow, that’s incredible.

I tried that for a bar fridge and couldn’t even score 1

There was a time (many years ago) I was the BBQ queen. In the space of a couple of years I gave everyone in my family and hubby's family a bbq that I'd won.
That was back in the days when there were lots of actual prizes to be won, not winning moment comps to win a $10 or other vouchers. I think that's a type of comp that's slowly disappearing. Promoters are not as keen to handle physical prizes anymore.

Worse. I miss the old days of entries on the back of an envelope! It was certainly a creative outlet in those days. Now it is so robotic that I don't get the same jot front entering. Fortunately, the joy is still there with the winning ;)

I mustn't get distracted. Hmm, distracted, that's a funny word. I wonder if someone can get tracted?
